In aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, one thing has become abundantly clear to the American people: energy security is national security. But after decades of indoctrination by environmental groups who have pushed a climate change agenda completely detached from reality, today America is left with neither.

Since the first day of his presidency, Joe Biden has capitulated to America’s most powerful, well-funded, dark money environmental groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, and Climate Action Network, whose agenda is to shut down fossil fuels and restructure our entire economy around a socialist-style Green New Deal.

The price at the gas pumps has hit a record-breaking $1.82 per litre in Vancouver. That’s the most expensive gasoline in North America.

While it might be tempting for some readers in Winnipeg and Calgary to chuckle at the karma coming back to bite a city whose mayor personally blocked the building of pipelines, it’s important to remember that bad ideas spread and the Trudeau government worships Vancouver’s gas pump prices.

The West’s war on energy is crippling Africa

Roughly a half century ago, rising energy prices devastated Western economies, helping make the autocrats of the Middle East insanely rich while propping up the slowly disintegrating Soviet empire. Today the world is again reeling from soaring energy prices; but this time the wound is self-inflicted — a product of misguided policies meant to accelerate the transition to green energy.

America may be headed for a new type of energy crisis. While fracking technology still gives us relative energy independence, there is a distinct possibility that an electricity energy crisis awaits us. What if the demand for electricity significantly exceeds the supply over the next decade? We’d have soaring prices and rolling brownouts. That crisis could easily be triggered by the electric vehicles (EVs) Biden’s administration is pushing.

The Green Left foments hysteria about supposedly catastrophic consequences if the earth’s current modest warming trend reaches 1.5 degrees Celsius. Preventing the planet from warming to that level, the Green Left insists, requires imposing draconian regulations that would kill economic growth and impoverish millions, especially in the Third World.

Yet since 1920, the planet already has warmed by 1.12 degrees. In other words, the world has conducted a massive experiment over the past 100 years by warming almost the amount that the Green Left so fears. The result of this test disproves the Green Left’s case.

The European Union, self-styled global leaders on climate change, acknowledged Wednesday that United Nations’ global greenhouse gas emission reduction targets cannot be achieved without what it now officially describes as “green” energy sources such as nuclear power and natural gas.

The European energy crisis is poised to go from very bad to unimaginably worse. While all eyes are on Ukraine and Russia, Europe’s energy woes are largely self-made, not due to outside forces.

Europe has made its own bed, disassembling dispatchable fuel diversity by closing well-operating coal and nuclear power plants. In doing so it has deepened its already troubling reliance on an insecure and volatile natural gas market dominated by Vladimir Putin. Europe is, in fact, more dependent on Russian gas today than it was when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
