Federal law on municipal gun bans could take precedence over Alberta bill preventing such gun grabs

New gun control legislation proposed by the federal government would likely take precedence over a private member’s bill that aims to prevent Alberta municipalities from passing municipal gun bans, according to a constitutional law expert.

The federal government introduced Bill C-21 on Tuesday. The proposed legislation would give municipalities the power to ban handguns by passing bylaws on their storage and transportation.

Michaela Glasgo, the UCP MLA for Brooks-Medicine Hat, introduced Bill 211 the Municipal Government (Firearms) Amendment Act on Dec. 8.

Wow! Way to go Alberta! I bet Doug Ford will enact similar legislation! Who am I kidding.

Toronto mulls handgun ban, illegal guns still flood city streets

Only one of the 20 handguns seized by Toronto police so far in 2021 are legal for Canadians to own

Despite pushes by federal and municipal leaders to end legal handgun ownership, Toronto’s criminals prefer to pack illegal iron.

Posts by Toronto Police’s “Guns Seized” Twitter account suggests the majority of crime guns confiscated by officers are prohibited — illegal for Canadians to own or possess, except under extremely specific circumstances.

LILLEY: Trudeau misfires with proposed gun-control measures

The best assessment I can give of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s gun control legislation is that it fails on all fronts, except perhaps the one that matters most to him — getting votes from people who think he is acting to stop gun crime.

The Liberals unveiled their newest gun control bill Tuesday to a heavy dose of criticism from people they likely thought they would please.

New legislation promises to let cities ban handguns, yet it remains unclear if it will work

While proposed gun control legislation put forward by the Liberal government on Tuesday would permit cities to ban handguns — with bylaws that restrict their possession, storage and transportation — it remains unclear whether the new measures would succeed in reducing gun crime.

Under the proposed legislation, cities would have a range of options.

Some include an outright ban on having a handgun anywhere within a city’s limits. Or a city could ban the storage of handguns in a house, requiring owners to pay for storage at a gun club or other facility.

White House Reassures Gun Control Groups It Will Fulfill ‘Ambitious’ Gun Control Agenda

With control of the House, Senate, and White House as a backdrop, Biden administration officials in their meeting with gun control advocates conveyed confidence about enacting gun control legislation through legislative and executive actions that in the past had not gotten the votes.

On Wednesday, Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice and White House Public Engagement Director and Senior Advisor Cedric Richmond held a virtual meeting with leaders of gun control groups, including Gifford’s Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action, and Brady, during which they discussed gun violence in America.

Watch a Dramatic Use of a Gun in Self-Defense That Didn’t Make News

If a defensive use of a firearm goes unreported in the media and nobody hears about it, does it really count?

I’m happy to report that the answer is a resounding “yes,” and I have evidence to prove it.

A man who was patrolling his employer’s property to protect it from thieves, confronted by an apparent carjacker, drew his legally carried firearm and subdued the stranger as police officers arrived and arrested the man.

Trudeau government poised to introduce new gun-grab legislation

OTTAWA — The Liberal government is poised to introduce legislation as early as next week aimed at strengthening gun control.

The long-promised bill would flesh out last spring’s ban of many firearms, propose stricter storage provisions and target gun smuggling.

The government outlawed a variety of firearms by cabinet order in May, saying they were built for the battlefield, not hunting or sport-shooting.

Americans Buying Guns at ‘Blistering Pace,’ FBI Data Shows: Expert

Newly released background check data from January shows Americans are buying guns at a “blistering pace,” a firearms expert said.

“That’s undoubtedly connected to President Joe Biden’s plans to attack the firearm industry by undoing and rewriting regulations and executive actions to target the firearm industry,” Mark Olivia, director of public affairs at the National Shooting Sports Foundation, said in a statement.

GUNTER: Conservatives tried to get tough on gun crime — the Liberals and NDP blocked them

Remember last May when the Trudeau Liberals used the Nova Scotia mass killing as an excuse to ban 1,500 models of “military-style” rifles and shotguns owned by law-abiding Canadians? (That number has since crept up to 9,500 models and perhaps 400,000 individual guns.)

The justification given for this largest firearms confiscation in Canadian history was public safety. Somehow taking long guns away from hunters, farmers and skeet shooters was going to encourage drug dealers and gang members to stop using handguns to kill one another.
