‘Never imagined this’: Indian village grapples with interfaith couple’s killing

The murder of an interfaith couple and the arrest of the woman’s brothers by the police for the alleged crime has shocked a small village in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state where residents have lived in harmony for years.

The bodies of 19-year-old Kajal, a Hindu, and 27-year-old Mohammad Arman, a Muslim, were found buried near a riverbank on the outskirts of Umri village on 21 January.

Police said they were beaten to death with a spade two days earlier, allegedly by Kajal’s three brothers, who have been arrested. They are in custody and have not commented on the killings.

Muslim who drowned daughter in a swamp because her ‘Western behaviour’ shamed the family is found guilty of honour killing in Holland

A fugitive father who tied up and drowned his daughter in an honour killing that shocked the Netherlands has been sentenced to 30 years in jail.

Khaled al Najjar, 53, skipped the country hours after the body of his daughter Ryan, 18, was found bound and gagged in a swamp at an isolated nature reserve and is now hiding in Syria.

His two sons Mohamed, 23, and Muhanad, 25, were also found guilty and given 20 years each but only the eldest was in court for the verdict.

Honor killing in US: Afghan man kills wife in Washington state femicide

An Afghan national has been charged with the first-degree murder of his wife after he allegedly committed an honor killing in Washington state over the belief she was having an affair, local media reported, citing the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Sayed Sadat, 37, of Auburn, called police to his home on the morning of November 23, where he was said to have confessed to killing 43-year-old Geety Sadat.

Europe’s Growing ‘Honour Killing’ Problem

Last May, two brothers allegedly bound their 18-year-old sister in packing tape, gagged her, and drowned her in a swamp. This was an honour killing, motivated by what the girl’s brothers saw as her ‘westernisation.’ During the trial last week, WhatsApp messages revealed that the family’s main grievances were the fact that she had refused an arranged marriage, had a boyfriend, and had stopped wearing a headscarf. “There is no other solution,” one of the brothers wrote in a message. The girl’s own mother said that she was “a disgrace to the family and deserves to die” and should be “wrapped in a shroud.” In a secretly recorded conversation, one brother said he believed the family had been humiliated by the girl’s behaviour, and the only way out was her death.

Ryan Al Najjar’s brothers have now been put on trial for her murder, while her father, who is accused of ordering the killing, fled the country to return to Syria.

Mohamed, 23, and Muhanad Al Najjar, 25, are charged with taking part in the horrific crime against their 18-year-old sister, whose body was found gagged with her hands bound behind her back, ankles taped together, and submerged in a swamp six days after she vanished from the family home in Joure.

In Pakistan, hundreds of women are killed every year after being accused of “dishonoring” their families.

Fattu Shah is a remote village in the north of Pakistan’s Sindh province. The drive from the nearest city, Ghotki, takes more than an hour. The road narrows as it cuts through cotton fields and winds around clay-brick houses scattered across endless stretches of farmland.

It’s a journey Aisha Dharejo has made countless times. For the past 15 years she has been researching what locals call “the graveyard for dishonored women.”

“Each grave reveals the story of a woman that has been silenced,” Dharejo told DW.

Sara Sharif’s father has ‘throat slashed with tuna tin’ by HMP Belmarsh inmates

Sara Sharif’s father had his neck and face cut in prison as he begins a life sentence for her murder, according to reports.

Urfan Sharif was allegedly jumped by two inmates in his cell at HMP Belmarsh armed with the lid of a tuna tin on New Year’s Day, The Sun reported.

Saga Forsgren Elneborg, 20, was found strangled to death at her home in the city of Örebro in April 2023 in a case that shocked the Scandinavian country.

Prosecutors claimed that her 22-year-old boyfriend Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim decided to murder her rather than face the shame of telling his Muslim family that his girlfriend – believed to be half Thai, half Swedish and Christian – was expecting his baby.

Illinois man is charged with murder of his three daughters and wife

This is the 63-year-old Illinois father who shot dead his wife and three daughters during ‘an argument’ at their home in Tinley Park on Sunday.

Maher Kassem has been charged with three counts of murder for killing wife Majeda and daughters Zahia and Halema, 25, and Hanan, 24.

Friends say the family were devout Muslims and Palestinian activists. Zahia, who also went by Zee, had recently visited Mecca.

Their mother Majeda devoted her life to ‘family and religion’, according to a fundraising site dedicated to completing a mosque in Mali in the family’s memory.

A Pakistani couple who migrated to Italy with their children have been given life sentences for the so-called honour killing of their 18-year-old daughter after she refused an arranged marriage and started dating.

Saman Abbas’s strangled body was found buried in farmland near her parents’ house in Novellara in northern Italy after she had resisted pressure to marry a cousin in Pakistan, reported her father to the police for beating her, and attempted suicide.

Pakistan dad ‘shot dead’ daughter to preserve family honour after she took a photo with boys

Police in Pakistan on Monday arrested a man for shooting his teenage daughter dead, after she appeared with boys in a photo uploaded to social media, in another incident of an honour killing.

The girl, said to be aged around 16 or 17, was fired at multiple times from a close range inside her family home in the northern town of Kohistan on Friday, local police chief Mukhtiar Ahmed said.
