Laid bare – the implacable march of jihad in the UK

HUGO Micheron is a French political scientist: a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University’s Institute for Transregional Studies, whose work focuses on the evolution of jihadism in Europe. In particular, he has examined how jihad took root and flourished in specific locations in Europe, where it was propagated by veterans of the Soviet-Afghan war and refugees from training camps for the Afghan resistance in Peshawar after these were shut down by the Pakistan government in 1992. Wherever these activists settled in Europe, hotbeds of extremist preaching sprang up, imparting their zeal to new generations reared in exile. These breeding grounds of jihad cross-fertilised, forming networks across north-western Europe while maintaining contact with the Middle East.

The Red-Pilling of John Cleese

The Red-Pilling of John Cleese

In 1979, comedian icon John Cleese sat across from the Bishop of Southwark and broadcaster Malcolm Muggeridge on BBC’s Friday Night, Saturday Morning, defending his troupe’s film Monty Python’s Life of Brian against charges of blasphemy. Calm, articulate, and fiercely secular, Cleese argued that religious institutions should never be immune to satire, ridicule, or robust critique. For many years, this battle often defined Cleese’s public persona: a classic British liberal, an iconoclast fighting back against the conservative Christian establishment of the 20th century.

The Islamic Terrorist Conquest of West Africa

The Islamic Terrorist Conquest of West Africa

The widened scope and quickened pace of the Islamic State’s military operations in the Sahel region — just below North Africa, roughly from Senegal to Sudan — threatens to alter the strategic orientation of the African continent. Efforts at countering terrorist operations in the Sahel, such as they were, have evidently failed. As all roads to Mali’s capital of Bamoko are now blocked, that country might be the first state to “go under.”

Toronto during FIFA World Cup at greater risk than Vancouver for terrorist attack: National security expert

Toronto during FIFA World Cup at greater risk than Vancouver for terrorist attack: National security expert

On May 6, the Trump White House released its 2026 United States Counterterrorism Strategy that found “legacy Islamist terrorists,” narcoterrorists, and violent extremists as the primary threats to their homeland. Now with the FIFA World Cup kicking off June 11 across North America, the document lands as the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are in the final weeks of preparing to host the largest sporting event on earth.

The threat level has increased considerably in recent months. In March, LBC exclusively reported that ISIS had been actively encouraging followers to target the 2026 World Cup, calling for mass casualty attacks. This month, Al-Qaeda released a new issue of its English-language periodical Inspire in video format, titled “Why We Call for Jihad Operations in the West,” encouraging lone wolf attacks inside Western countries. A Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) analysis published last week concluded: “The risk has never been higher.”
