Shamima Begum is the daughter of Bangladeshi immigrants to the U.K. In 2015, when news of the Islamic State (ISIS) first reached Great Britain, Begum — then aged 15 – knew where she most wanted to be. Inspired by tales of Islamic State fighters decapitating Infidels, she immediately set out with two classmates from school to join the paradise on earth being created by her Muslim soul mates in the Islamic State. She later told a British journalist that she had no qualms or doubts about that practice of decapitating enemies; it was a matter, she said, “of Islam.”

Shamima Begum has admitted she never once considered turning back as she travelled 700 miles through Turkey to join ISIS.

The former London schoolgirl, who was 15 when she made the journey in 2015, tells a new BBC podcast she could have safely returned to the UK but chose not to.

Questioned by journalist Joshua Baker whether she ever considered going back on her plan to join the death cult, she says: ‘No, not along the journey.’

Those who are expecting the Disneyfication of her story may well be disappointed. In a previous series, Baker forensically examined and challenged the assertions of another – much more unlikely – Isis convert, the US Indiana soccer mom Samantha Sally. Sally, who was jailed in the US in 2020 for financing terrorism, took her children with her to Syria, ending up with her terrorist husband in the Caliphate stronghold of Raqqa. Baker spent much of that series carefully exposing the inconsistencies in her story built around a narrative that she was hapless, helpless and exploited.
