Pe’er Krut: Anti-Israel tirade at Ontario high school shows Jews are targets wherever they go

With shots fired at two Canadian Jewish schools in late May, and an anti-Israel tirade waged by a guest speaker reported at a Catholic school, where should Jewish students turn? Where are we safe?

On May 21, students at St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School in Richmond Hill, Ont., were unwittingly ushered into an assembly where a guest speaker, introduced simply as a surgeon, projected graphic imagery from the Israel-Hamas conflict. Accompanying the visuals were a series of unfounded claims about the war, according to an anonymous letter shared by the Jewish Educators and Families Association of Canada.

It is long overdue that blame be placed on our mainstream political parties for their callous import of Islamists. Why were they so cruel to us?

The letter and the law

When war erupted in Gaza, some TMU law students signed an incendiary petition criticizing Israel. Then came the backlash – and an existential crisis about their school’s mission

When a new law school in Toronto opened its doors in September, 2020, its brochure promised an unapologetically “progressive” legal education.

Ryerson Law, as it was then called, embraced diversity, equity and inclusion. Technology would be central. The curriculum included professional placements, so students would graduate ready to be working lawyers. At its core, this new school – soon to be renamed the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University – promised to change the status quo.

“We are ready to engage with the most challenging legal issues of our time,” dean Donna Young, the only Black woman leading one of Canada’s 24 law schools, said at the launch ceremony.

A DEI law school is a dubious law school.

Camp intifada? Anti-Israel encampment to host revolutionary summer camp at Canadian university

An anti-Israel protest encampment at the Canadian McGill University is set to host a revolution summer camp for youth starting Monday, Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights McGill announced on Thursday.

I swear they’re being trolled.

This ongoing support for Hamas comes amid US-led efforts to end the current war in the Gaza Strip, a move that would effectively keep Hamas in power to prepare for its next massacre of Israelis.

A careful détente kept the war in Gaza from fracturing Toronto council. A move to create ‘bubble zones’ threatened that peace

As last month’s Toronto city council meeting stretched late into the evening, a debate began that the mayor and some of her council allies had been trying to avoid.

For months, some city councils, Queen’s Park and Parliament have seen fierce clashes over how to respond to the Israel-Hamas war, and an escalating death toll in Gaza.

Councillors and city hall insiders tell the Star there has been a focus on private, sometimes difficult conversations and behind-the-scenes advocacy over how best to deal with local issues, from the safety concerns of the city’s Jewish community to the Charter rights of pro-Palestinian protesters, with the mayor trying to stick to the middle ground and avoid a blowout that would both be unhelpful to the business of city hall, and irresponsibly sow further division in an already tense city.
