A wake-up call for Canada’s military reserves strategy

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine risks creating a global military conflagration for which Canada is depressingly unprepared.

For decades, while geopolitical tensions have mounted around the globe, Canada’s defence spending has fallen, dropping from two per cent of GDP in 1990, to 1.3 per cent in 2019, leaving our militarily ill-equipped nation incapable of purchasing a single fighter jet after 13 years of trying or replacing military pistols from the Second World War, and one that fails to live up to its past as a leading international peacekeeper.

Woke and Stupid: As Russia Invades Ukraine, U.S. Army Gives Mandatory Training on Gender Identity

We can only hope that the madness in Ukraine doesn’t escalate to the extent that the U.S. military ends up getting involved. It’s clear that Gen. Mark Milley and the rest of the brass have learned absolutely no lessons from Afghanistan and are determined to repeat the same mistakes that led up to the catastrophically mishandled withdrawal from Kabul. If the Army were called upon to move into Ukraine, which would be an indication that the situation there had gotten wildly out of control, it isn’t at all clear that today’s woke force would pose a significant threat even to the manifestly weak and sluggish Russian forces. An American army presence in Ukraine would likely herald World War III, and we hope it won’t come to that, but if it does, look out.

Canadian Armed Forces deployed to Quebec to help with COVID-19 vaccination campaign

They really do think we’re stupid.

Did China Steal Its Way to Military Might?

As the People’s Republic of China (PRC) emerged from war and revolution in 1949, it became apparent that the Chinese economy lacked the capacity to compete with the U.S. or the U.S.S.R. in the production of advanced military technology. Transfers from the Soviet Union helped remedy the gap in the 1950s, as did transfers from the United States and Europe in the 1970s and 1980s. Still, the Cultural Revolution stifled technology and scientific research, leaving the Chinese even farther behind.

Thus, China has long supplemented legitimate transfers and domestic innovation with industrial espionage. In short, the PRC has a well-established habit of pilfering weapons technology from Russia and the United States. As the years have gone by, Beijing’s spies have become ever more skillful and flexible in their approach.
