Sell Arms to Taiwan Now: China Is Bluffing

“The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations,” Xi Jinping told President Donald Trump during their summit this month, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning. “If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.”

“The Taiwan Question,” according to China’s embassy in Washington, is the first of “the four red lines” in China-U.S. relations that “must not be challenged.”

The People’s Republic of China, however, is bluffing.

Ottawa May Be Delaying Taiwan Trade Deal to Avoid Upsetting China, Taipei’s Envoy Says

Taiwan’s ambassador to Canada says Ottawa may be delaying the signing of a trade agreement with the island nation as it’s seeking closer ties with Beijing.

Harry Tseng, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada, said in an interview with CBC’s French arm Radio-Canada that Taiwan has been left with the impression that Canada is seeking to improve its relations with China at the expense of its relationship with Taiwan.

Every country for itself: The chilling message in Mark Carney’s snub of Taiwan

Imagine for a moment that a delegation of friendly foreign lawmakers has been urgently summoned back home in the middle of an all-expenses-paid visit to Ottawa.

Invited to Canada in the hope of building relationships and nurturing alliances in a hostile world, they’ve fled to avoid angering U.S. President Donald Trump, or to be seen as fraternizing with a territory he claims as the 51st American state.

The insult to Canada and to Canadians would be obvious.

After Trump Hits Venezuela, Will China Invade Taiwan?

President Donald Trump’s stunning moves against Venezuela on January 3 are sparking concerns that China may soon move against Taiwan.

Trump on December 16 imposed a “total and complete blockade” on sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela, and some expressed their belief that his actions could make it easier for China to impose similar measures on Taiwan, which China claims as its own.

“If the U.S. blockades to change political outcomes in Venezuela, China can justify coercive measures against Taiwan on so-called security grounds,” Craig Singleton of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies told Reuters. “The legal contexts differ, but the propaganda opening is real.”

Kinew says drop tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to get Chinese duties dropped

WINNIPEG – Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is asking the prime minister to scrap Canada’s 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles in return for China lifting its tariffs on Canadian canola and pork.

Kinew says in a letter to Mark Carney on Saturday that while he believes protecting Canada’s vehicle industry is important, he says the country’s approach “has created a two-front trade war that disproportionally affects Western Canada.”

The premier says in the letter that China’s tariffs — widely seen as a response to Canada imposing the electric vehicle levy — have already caused a sharp drop in canola prices and that one vertically integrated pork producer in Manitoba is reporting a $19 million negative impact on an annual basis.

Canada ready to perform mass evacuation of Taiwan in case of Chinese invasion: officials

After Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government renewed a longstanding threat to seize control of Taiwan through force on Thursday, Canadian officials confirmed the military is prepared to conduct a mass evacuation of expatriates in the Indo-Pacific region.

Appearing before the House defence committee, Major-General Robert Ritchie told MPs the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) maintain the capability to perform a “non-combatant evacuation operation,” should a request be received from the federal government.

… A report from the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada suggests more than 20,000 Canadians live in Taiwan.

Propaganda or fair warning? Taiwanese TV show imagines Chinese invasion

A Chinese fighter jet plane crashes in the waters off Taiwan’s coast, prompting Chinese warships to blockade the island for a “search and rescue”.

Taiwanese soldiers manning Dadan Island, a rocky outcrop mere kilometres from China’s coast, begin vanishing mysteriously.

Then one night, a fishing boat lands on Dadan. A signal flare arcs into the inky sky – and illuminates Chinese soldiers who have spilled out of the boat and amassed on the beach.

Hegseth warns China poses ‘imminent’ threat to Taiwan and urges Asia to boost defence

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has warned of China posing an “imminent” threat to Taiwan, while urging Asian countries to boost defence spending and work with the US to deter war.

While the US does not “seek to dominate or strangle China”, it would not be pushed out of Asia nor allow its allies to be intimidated, Hegseth said while addressing a high-level Asian defence summit.

In response, China has accused the US of being the “biggest troublemaker” for regional peace.

China Threatens Taiwan With Largest Military Drill In Decades As Biden Quietly Disappears From World Stage

The Chinese navy deployed a group of 60 ships and 30 coast guard vessels off the coast of Taiwan this week in what appears to be their largest show of force since 1996, according to the Wall Street Journal Tuesday. The move comes as Biden has increasingly winded down his duties in anticipation of passing his responsibilities to Trump, punctuated by him appearing to fall asleep during a meeting with African leaders in Angola Dec. 4.

The three-judge panel overturned a preliminary injunction issued by a federal court, which barred the university from revealing the identities of current and former members of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, a volunteer group that monitors the use of animals for medical research on campus.

“Basic ‘biographical data,’ including a person’s ‘name, address, identification, place of birth, telephone number, occupation, sex, description, and legal aliases,’ is not highly sensitive personal information, and thus categorically does not ‘implicate the right to privacy,” the panel wrote in its five-page, unanimous ruling responding to the committee member’s lawsuit to prevent their names from subject to a public records request.
