Asylum claims in Canada are down nearly 40 per cent in 2025. Here’s why

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Imagine a Western country declaring it has zero irregular migration. It sounds impossible, but that is exactly what the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed last month.

“More than 200 days into this job, we have achieved operational security at the border,” the DHS website touted, echoing U.S. President Donald Trump’s oft-made claims of having halted illegal migration. “Zero illegal immigrants were released into the country in May, June, and July.”

Recognition of Palestinian state puts Canada at odds with U.S.

Canada, Britain and Australia officially recognized a Palestinian state on Sunday, a co-ordinated effort to put pressure on Israel as it wages war in Gaza, and to revive the chances of a two-state solution to the conflict.

Portugal followed suit with a similar statement later in the day, and France is expected to issue its recognition Monday.

The decision by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government puts it at odds with this country’s most important ally, the United States, and represents a significant shift in Canadian foreign policy, which previously held that such recognition would come only after a negotiated peace agreement between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Trump hails Charlie Kirk as martyr to thousands at memorial service

US President Donald Trump hailed the conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a “great American hero” and “martyr” during a speech to tens of thousands of mourners at a memorial service in Arizona.

Trump was the headline speaker at the packed event on Sunday, which saw top officials from his administration, including Vice-President JD Vance, praise Kirk’s political legacy after he was shot dead on 10 September.

Kirk’s wife, Erika, delivered a tearful speech at the State Farm Stadium near Phoenix, in which she said she had forgiven her husband’s alleged killer.

When Trump came to town

Not even the twactivists of Led By Donkeys or the Stop Trump coalition could ruin the president’s state visit.

Donald Trump became the first sitting US president to enjoy a second full state visit to the UK. And by comparison with his first, way back in 2019, this time around was considerably less marred or, if you prefer, enlivened, by activist interventions.

Interest from U.S. doctors looking to work in Canada has spiked but few have made the move

The passing thought of moving to Canada from the United States because of its political climate became an active idea for physician Libby Fleming when, in 2022, the constitutional right to abortion was overturned south of the border.

She had a planned trip to Costa Rica later that summer but cancelled it, booking a plane ticket to Nova Scotia instead. The Atlantic province was a bucket-list destination for her. It was also actively recruiting foreign physicians to address a country-wide shortage of doctors.

Charlie Kirk’s Assassination Is Evidence of Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual warfare is real, undeniably real, and the Western world is currently in the throes of it. Some years ago, it may have been easy (or at least easier than it is now) to brush off the wearisome warning of Christians who saw Satan’s hand in everything from blatant evils like abortion to sly innuendo in children’s movies. But the present state of the Western world leaves no doubt that powers and principalities are doing battle here and now, and the prizes being fought for are our souls.

Canada and Mexico Turn to Trains and Ports to Skirt U.S. Tariff Wall

This week I joined Prime Minister Mark Carney on his whirlwind trip to Mexico City to meet the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

We were in Mexico for only about 25 hours. But as I wrote with Emiliano Rodriguez Mega, my colleague who is based in Mexico City, Mr. Carney apparently succeeded in one of his key objectives: winning back Mexico’s trust while the two countries grapple with President Trump’s tariff chaos.

I can’t wait to see what Trump has in store for Carney when CUSMA is renegotiated, he and Mexico will stick it to him I suspect.

California bans most law enforcement including ICE from wearing masks

California’s governor has signed a bill to ban local and federal law enforcement officers, including with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), from wearing face masks while on duty.

The ban, which comes into effect on 1 January 2026, is part of a series of bills that aims to protect residents from what Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has called “secret police” roaming the streets.

US Attorney Bill Essayli, a Trump appointee, said California “has no jurisdiction over the federal government”, adding the law has “no effect on our operations” and agents “will continue to protect their identities”.

Canadian politicians, experts push back against U.S. ambassador’s anti-Americanism concerns

Canadian politicians and experts are pushing back against U.S. ambassador Pete Hoekstra’s frustration over the anti-American sentiment he’s seen in Canada after U.S. President Donald Trump hit the world with tariffs.

“When you kick the dog, you can’t blame it for snarling back,” said Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association and member of the prime minister’s Canada-U.S. relations council.

That’s A Good Thing: Number of asylum seekers turned back by Canada grows despite U.S. threat of third-country deportation

Canada – Camp of The Saints Doormat

Canada’s government is sending more asylum-seekers hoping to file claims in Canada back to the U.S. under a bilateral pact, even as the U.S. says it may deport them to third countries.

Some of the people Canada is turning back should be eligible to file refugee claims in Canada, lawyers say, under exemptions to the Safe Third Country Agreement. The agreement broadly requires asylum-seekers at the Canada-U.S. border to be sent back to the first of the two countries they entered but allows some people – for example those with close family in Canada or stateless persons – to file claims.

Not our problem.

Canadians aren’t mad at America anymore. We’re hurt, suspicious, and moving on

It has been nine months since Donald Trump returned to the White House, and in that time has upended the world order around trade, relentlessly expressed an “America first” mentality, and mused about annexing Canada as the 51st state.

He also seems to have upended how Canadians see our southern neighbour.

I was never mad at Trump or America.

I remain angry that Canada is run as a 2nd rate fiefdom by our profiteering elites who deliberately undermine citizens at every turn.

What’s left out of media reporting on the National Guard in D.C. tells the tale of relentless bias

USA Today published an article detailing how expensive it is for National Guard troops to act as D.C. garbage men. It’s intended to anger readers, and probably did anger many who didn’t notice the most important information that USA Today left out of the article.

So, ask yourself what’s missing in this headline and article?
