Enbridge Line 5: Canada invokes 1977 treaty again over dispute

The Canadian government is invoking for the second time in less than a year a 1977 treaty that will force the American government to negotiate over the fate of Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline.

Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly announced the invocation of the treaty in a statement on Monday, pointing to the “significant” impact shutting down the pipeline would carry for Canadian jobs and bills.

America’s Voluntary Military Suicide

Though largely unreported by mainstream media, the slow-motion collapse of America’s all-volunteer military is a reality of grave importance to national identity and international security. All branches of service are significantly below their essential recruitment goals and have been for several years. The Army is in the most critical shape. This year, it has recruited only 40 percent of the soldiers needed for minimal force replacement, despite ever-lowering standards and ever-increasing enticements for enlistment.

Twitter and Meta take down pro-US propaganda campaign

Twitter and Meta have removed from their platforms an online propaganda campaign aimed at promoting US interests abroad, researchers say.

This is the first major covert pro-US propaganda operation taken down by the tech giants, says a report by social media analytics firm Graphika and the Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO).

They removed dozens of accounts used in the campaign in July and August.

It is not clear who is behind the propaganda operation.

The U.S. intelligence community will evaluate the potential national security risks stemming from former President Donald Trump’s possession of top-secret documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told top lawmakers.

In a letter obtained by POLITICO and dated Friday, Haines told House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) that her office will lead an “assessment of the potential risk to national security that would result from the disclosure of the relevant documents.”

The rich, poor and criminal go off grid in US

Faced with rising energy prices, manic hours at work, sadistic bosses and the prospect of doing it all again on Monday morning, who has not thought of disappearing into the hills?

The price of land in rural areas of Utah, Idaho, Washington state and Montana shot up during the coronavirus pandemic as the minds of city dwellers, facing lockdowns in their tiny but valuable homes, drifted to dreams of living off the grid.

US ship unable to get Solomon Islands’ permission to dock, says Washington

A United States coast guard vessel was unable to enter Solomon Islands for a routine port call because its government did not respond to a request to refuel and provision, a US official said.

The Solomons government did not immediately answer a Reuters request for comment. It has had a tense relationship with the US and its allies since striking a security pact with China in May.

The USCGC Oliver Henry was on patrol for illegal fishing in the South Pacific for a regional fisheries agency when it failed to obtain entry to refuel at Honiara, the Solomons’ capital, a US coast guard press officer said in an emailed statement.

US government diet guidelines ignore climate crisis say usual suspects

Meat and guns – The American Way.

“… A sustainability component would encourage Americans to eat less meat and dairy, which have a significantly higher climate impact than nutritionally comparable plant-based foods. “It would be virtually impossible to even meet the two-degree [Celsius] limit in global temperature change without incorporating substantial reductions in beef intake,” said Mark Rifkin, senior food and agriculture policy specialist for the Center for Biological Diversity, another signatory to the letter.”

Why Justin Trudeau’s Canada Is So Soft on China

Despite repeated calls from the Biden administration, the Canadian government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has yet to formulate a public foreign policy strategy to deal with China. Canada has the world’s ninth-largest economy, a population of nearly forty million, a major Pacific Ocean coastline, and fully benefits from the U.S. missile defense architecture, to which it makes no contribution. Yet it is a disappointingly meek U.S. ally. Ottawa has been pursuing a virtually neutralist strategy of avoiding committing to any U.S. effort to harness the coalition of democracies to confront the Chinese threat to Taiwan. Washington needs to be aware that any Canadian foreign policy on China will be heavily influenced by domestic electoral politics.

China’s ‘staggering’ military build-up is a wake-up call for US

China is investing heavily in combat drones, including electronic warfare versions that would play a significant role in any attack on Taiwan.

However, more than anything else, the huge inventory of anti-ship ballistic missiles poses the gravest threat to United States aircraft carrier strike groups that represent America’s most potent projection of naval firepower in the Indo-Pacific region.

China has taken giant steps towards its dream of maritime superpower status with a warship-building programme that outmatches the US.

Dr. Fauci’s Legacy – Dr. Marty Makary on the public health risk of putting America’s fate in the hands of one doctor.

Anthony Fauci is ending his long and celebrated government career by being widely lauded for getting so much so very wrong on Covid-19.

Now 81 years old, Dr. Fauci has spent 38 years as head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health. He has been rightly honored for his many contributions over the decades, most notably during the fight against AIDS, for which he was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush. But to Covid-19 he brought a monomaniacal focus on vanquishing a single virus, whatever the cost—neglecting the damage that can follow when public health loses sight of the public’s health.

2 men convicted in plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Whitmer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A jury on Tuesday convicted two men of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2020, delivering swift verdicts in a plot that was broken up by the FBI and described as a rallying cry for a U.S. civil war by anti-government extremists.

The result was a big victory for the U.S. Justice Department. A different jury just four months ago couldn’t reach unanimous decisions on Adam Fox or Barry Croft Jr. but acquitted two other men, a stunning conclusion that led to a second trial.
