Stephen Maher: Trump’s Venezuela takeover is a warning for Canada. Here’s what we have to prepare for

The good news about the U.S. abduction of Nicolás Maduro is that Venezuela is finally rid of a corrupt, violent and buffoonish leader.

The bad news is that the country may soon be under the power of another corrupt, violent and buffoonish leader — Donald Trump — who is itching to use his military might on other countries in the Western Hemisphere.

That means nervous calculations are taking place in the capitals of the countries he has threatened: Havana, Bogota, Mexico City, Ottawa and Copenhagen.

Ginned up outrage. The Star uses a pic of an astro-turfed demo and didn’t Maher once compare Antifa extremists with the men who landed on D-Day.

After Trump Hits Venezuela, Will China Invade Taiwan?

President Donald Trump’s stunning moves against Venezuela on January 3 are sparking concerns that China may soon move against Taiwan.

Trump on December 16 imposed a “total and complete blockade” on sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela, and some expressed their belief that his actions could make it easier for China to impose similar measures on Taiwan, which China claims as its own.

“If the U.S. blockades to change political outcomes in Venezuela, China can justify coercive measures against Taiwan on so-called security grounds,” Craig Singleton of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies told Reuters. “The legal contexts differ, but the propaganda opening is real.”

Massive Coverup Underway in Washington State to Stop Reporting of Somali Daycare Fraud

Oh No!

The far, far left in power in Washington has begun a full-court press operation to hide information about Somali daycare or adult centers in Washington state. The state, the city of Seattle, and legislators in Olympia are more concerned about Somali fraud making the news than they are about the rip-off of American taxpayers.

What would a US takeover of Greenland look like? Four options examined

After Donald Trump’s audacious attack on Venezuela, the prospect of American incursion into the Arctic territory, long mooted, seems more plausible

Delivering his state of the union speech last year, President Trump ruminated about the seizure of more than 800,000 square miles of territory from a Nato ally.

The “incredible people of Greenland”, he told Congress in March, had every right to determine their own future, and if they were to decide that this future lay within the United States, so much the better.

“We need it, really, for international world security,” Trump added. “One way or the other, we’re going to get it.”

I suspect a lot of  TDS is motivated by the fact Trump reminds entire nations they are unable to police their own streets.

Careful what you wish for.

Tasha Kheiriddin: Venezuela proves Trump wants China out. Carney better take notice

Happy New Year. Or not, depending on where you find yourself these days. If you’re deposed Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, that’s in a cell in Brooklyn, N.Y. If you’re U.S. President Donald Trump, that’s on the catbird seat in Washington, D.C. And if you’re Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, that’s on a tightrope in Ottawa, trying to strike the right note with an ally that looks more like an aggressor every day.

Wager platform Polymarket not paying out on bets on US invasion of Venezuela

The online wager platform Polymarket has angered some gamblers by declaring it will not pay out yet on millions of dollars’ worth of bets on a US invasion of Venezuela, arguing that the capture of the then president, Nicolás Maduro, does not qualify.

Before Donald Trump’s forces captured Maduro on Saturday morning, some traders appeared to have anticipated the shock move by placing bets on “prediction markets”.

These are gambling platforms that allow individuals to wager on a range of markets that have been created by the host website. They are typically binary bets, punting on yes/no or higher/lower outcomes.

Why does Trump want Greenland and what could it mean for Nato?

The White House says Donald Trump and his close advisers are discussing options for taking over Greenland, as the US president continues to argue it would benefit his nation’s security.

His demands have been rejected by the island’s leaders and by Nato member Denmark, of which Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory.

Where is Greenland and why does it matter to Trump?

Ouch.

Sharan Kaur: The dangerous precedent of Poilievre’s support for Maduro’s arrest

In the calculus of modern-day populism, there is no greater currency than the decisive act. In an unprecedented moment this past week, the world watched as U.S. President Donald Trump cashed in, deploying American special forces to snatch illegitimate self-proclaimed leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from Caracas and deliver him to a New York jail cell.

In the immediate aftermath, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre did not hesitate to add his own signature to the transaction. By congratulating Trump on this “arrest” and branding Maduro a “narco terrorist” who must rot in prison, Poilievre has done more than just celebrate the fall of a tyrant; he has signalled a willingness to dismantle the very international order that keeps a country like Canada safe.

Maduro is bad but Poilievre is worse cuz he’s a populist like Trump and they do bad things like topple Narco State dictators.

US seizes Russian-flagged oil tanker in Atlantic after two-week pursuit

The US has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the Atlantic Ocean in a high-stakes operation that could risk confrontation with the Kremlin after Moscow reportedly dispatched a submarine to safeguard the vessel.

The Marinera, formerly known as the Bella 1, “was seized in the North Atlantic pursuant to a warrant issued by a US federal court after being tracked by USCGC Munro”, US European Command said in a post on X. US media reported that the country’s coastguard had successfully boarded the oil tanker, facing no resistance.

The Russian state broadcaster RT earlier published two grainy photographs showing a helicopter approaching the tanker, saying an operation was under way.

Bob Rae says Trump’s actions in Venezuela suggest Canada is ‘on the menu’

U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent actions in Venezuela and his overall strategy for the Western Hemisphere should serve as a warning to all Canadians and require a more fulsome response from its political leaders, Canada’s former ambassador to the United Nations says.

Bob Rae, who finished his five-year ambassadorship last November, told Global News in an interview that the U.S. under Trump is rejecting multilateralism in favour of asserting its dominance over the hemisphere, without “any notion of legality.”

After Donald Trump’s capture of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro, does Doug Ford need to watch his back?

Generalissimo Ford fears no man.

Do we need to beef up security for Doug Ford in 2026?

I ask after the surreal capture of Venezuela president Nicolás Maduro this weekend. It was like a Michael Bay blockbuster with a similar running time. One second, Maduro is planning another defiant dance video. The next, American wizards knock out the lights in Caracas as the skies rumble with F-22 Raptors and heavily armed extraction teams.

Somali Terror in America

At Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland, Oregon, tens of thousands of people crowded around a massive Douglas fir tree decked with lights. Waiting for the carnage to begin was Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a Somali ‘child’ refugee, who was dreaming of killing them all.

In 2010, Mohamud had urged a friend of his traveling to Mecca to pray “that I will be a martyr in the highest chambers of paradise.” He planned to attack Americans “in their own element with their families celebrating the holidays.” And Christmas was the perfect time of the year to do it.

World Trade Center lit green for Muslim Heritage Month makes me green around the gills

Just 24 hours after New York City’s first Muslim mayor, Democrat-Socialist Zohran Mamdani, took office — and just twenty-four years after Muslim terrorists murdered nearly 3,000 New Yorkers in the 9/11 attack that destroyed New York City’s Twin Towers —  Kathy Hochul, the Empire State’s Democrat governor, ordered One World Trade Center, built at Ground Zero, to be lit in Islamic green to celebrate Muslim American Heritage Month.
