Mélanie Joly’s office missed e-mail alerting them to Russian embassy party

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly’s office staff did not read an e-mail that said her department was sending a representative to a Russian embassy party – missing a chance to avert an incident that has embarrassed Canada at home and abroad, two senior government sources say.

Global Affairs Canada sent the e-mail to Ms. Joly’s chief of staff, Sandra Aubé, and four other staff members before last Friday’s Russia Day embassy party informing them that deputy chief of protocol Yasemin Heinbecker would join the festivities, the sources said.

None of Ms. Joly’s senior staff read the department e-mail, because they were busy assisting Ms. Joly, who was attending the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, the sources said. The Globe is not identifying the officials as they were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.

GUNTER: Canada’s nanny state wants to label ground beef unhealthy

I’m not sure there’s as much to worry about as ranchers and the Alberta government think there is. Still, it’s the principle of the thing.

Ottawa wants to stick preachy new labels on the front of ground beef packages warning that the contents are unhealthy. (And Health Canada means unhealthy to eat even after it’s cooked, not just raw, which we all already know.)

But it’s barbecue season. It’s getting hot out.

A New York venue has canceled a sold-out concert by would-be presidential assassin John Hinckley Jr. after deciding hosting the event was too risky.

In a statement posted to social media on Wednesday, the Market Hotel, a concert hall in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, cited “the safety of our vulnerable communities” for its decision to disinvite the man who shot President Reagan in March 1981 from performing on July 8.

The Satanic Temple comes to Boston

Devil worshippers for free speech? Not quite.

The Satanic Temple is petitioning the City of Boston to fly their newly designed Satanic flag over City Hall. After a court ruled that the city had to fly a Christian group’s flag, the Temple insisted that it also had the right to display its banner during “Satanic Appreciation Week” from July 23 to 29.

According to Lucien Greaves, the Temple’s founder, “A public forum that allows for religious expression can either announce a dedication to religious pluralism or it can signal a decline into theocracy by allowing public representatives to dictate limits on the civic capacities of some religious identities by exercising exclusive preference for others.”

Russian spy caught trying to infiltrate war crimes court, says Netherlands

A Russian spy tried and failed to secure an internship at the international criminal court (ICC) using the false identity of a Brazilian citizen that he had built up over more than a decade, according to Dutch intelligence.

Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov, 36, accused of being an agent of Russia’s GRU military intelligence, flew to the Netherlands in April believing he had succeeded in an extraordinary attempt to gain inside access to the war crimes court, using the false identity of Viktor Muller Ferreira, 33.

However, Cherkasov had already been found out by western intelligence officers. When he arrived to take up his position, he was detained by Dutch immigration officials and sent back to Brazil, marking failure after years of preparation.

Residential school survivors call on Pope to acknowledge unmarked graves

“There’s a lot of denial happening about us finding graves across the country,” said survivor Ted Quewezance, the group’s co-chair.

“It’s about truth telling … We based our decision on that ground penetrating radar, on the elders, the oral history of the elders and we never expected to find anything, but we did.”

They want the Pope to acknowledge imaginary graves. I bet he cancels his visit.

China Says Signal From Advanced Alien Civilization Might Have Been Detected

China – a pioneer of eating dogs and cats in space.

Scientists in China say they have detected what could be the trace of a signal from an alien civilization.

The researchers have identified what they have called “suspicious” signals from space as part of a search for evidence of aliens, and work is ongoing to determine what they might be.

The signals were detected by China’s FAST radio telescope, also referred to as the “Sky Eye” telescope. With a dish diameter of 1,600 ft, it is the largest of its kind in the world, and since 2020 the telescope has been involved in researching possible alien life.

Thousands of Cattle Reported Dead

The current heat wave blazing through Kansas feedlots has killed an estimated 10,000 head of fat cattle.

Final death numbers continue to come in, but that early estimate was shared with DTN by livestock experts, who put the geographical center point for those deaths at Ulysses, Kansas.

DTN calls to feedlots in the area and to ranchers whose branded animals were seen in some privately shared photos of dead cattle were not immediately returned.

Saudi authorities seize rainbow toys for promoting homosexuality

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have been seizing rainbow-coloured toys and children’s clothing, which they claim encourage homosexuality, state TV says.

An Al-Ekhbariya report showed commerce ministry officials removing a range of items from shops in the capital Riyadh.

They included hair clips, pop-its, t-shirts, hats and pencil cases.

One official said the items “contradict the Islamic faith and public morals, and promote homosexual colours targeting the younger generation”.
