Arrest All Monkeys: Report all suspected monkeypox cases immediately, Ontario’s top public health official orders

Ontario’s top public health official issued an order to healthcare providers requiring them to report any possible or suspected cases of monkeypox to local authorities.

In a copy of the order, which was issued under section 77.6 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, it states that health-care providers must provide Public Health Ontario with information on any patient that meets the “case definitions” of monkeypox.

The information will be used for investigative purposes, as well as conducting case and contact management.

‘Extremely active’ jumping worms that can leap a foot raise alarm in California

An invasive worm species known for its “voracious appetite” and ability to jump a foot in the air is raising alarm in California, where scientists have expressed concerns about the threat the worms pose to forest ecosystems.

The Amynthas agrestis, also known as the Asian jumping worm, Alabama jumper or crazy snake worm, have been spotted in California in recent months. The earthworm is native to east Asia, particularly to Japan and the Korean peninsula. However, in recent years the worms made their way to North America via various landscape plants that have been imported from the region.

A prominent Inuvialuit leader said Canada must build up a more consistent presence in the Arctic if the country is going to protect its sovereignty in the region.

Duane Smith, chair and CEO of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation — which represents the interests of Inuit in the western Arctic — said the region is the “backdoor into Canada” and his community has been on the “front lines” of Canadian sovereignty.

Humans Are About to Send Mixed Messages to Space

The woke messages may incur the wrath of the aliens.

Space organizations will soon send binary-encoded messages to space from radio telescopes, hoping they eventually reach intelligent aliens. A NASA-led team of scientists is sending the right message to the wrong place. A group called Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) is sending the wrong message to the right place. Their overt purpose is to transmit interstellar messages to extraterrestrial civilizations, but their immediate audience is earthlings.

Student protesters crash Turning Point USA meeting at Missouri high school

When students at a Missouri high school got together to discuss starting a chapter of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, they were met by protesting peers who jeered them and ended up shattering a glass table.

According to The Kansas City Star, when the politically conservative students met in the Lee’s Summit West High School library on Tuesday, “many [other] students filled the library to protest, while hundreds more protested outside in the courtyard.”

The rot runs deep.

‘A crutch to continue to prejudice’: Montreal’s LGBTQ community fears stigma from monkeypox

David Hawkins wasn’t alive during the height of the AIDS crisis in the mid-1980s, but decades later, his organization is still working on dispelling harmful myths associated with the disease.

“All these years later, it is still seen as being the gay disease, and it’s stuff like that that people still point to as the reason for the blood ban for men who have sex with men to donate blood … We’re still fighting that,” said the executive director of Montreal’s West Island LGBTQ2+ Centre.

Now, LGBTQ advocacy groups and experts are concerned about another wave of discrimination hitting the community as several countries, including most recently Canada, are confirming cases of monkeypox, which has so far been identified mainly among men who have had sexual relations with other men.

Monkeypox: That unasked question

Scientists, it seems, are baffled by the unexplained appearance of the smallpox-like illness associated with rodents called “monkeypox” in the West which brings unsightly sores to the skin of those who are afflicted with it.

Long a disease seen mostly in parts of tropical Africa, it has now made appearances in the U.S. continental Europe, Canada, and the U.K., all at approximately the same time.

The Group of Seven? You Mean The Group of Seven Colonialist Oppressors!

Content warning for Indigenous readers: colonial violence is discussed in this essay.

Let’s liberate the Canadian landscape from the Group of Seven and their nationalist mythmaking

It has taken me a long time to reconcile the Group of Seven and their place in Canada’s mythology. On one hand, I love their paintings: they are beautiful and varied in their landscapes, a representation of these lands in all their sacredness and life. On the other hand, they suffocate. The Group of Seven’s nationalist story surrounds us like the prints of their work that hang in Canada’s households, schools, and galleries.

This sounds like culturally appropriated Bullshit. h/t DM

Legal experts accuse Leslyn Lewis of ‘fearmongering’ over WHO pandemic pact

Conservative leadership hopeful Leslyn Lewis has outlined a frightening scenario: if Canada signs an international pandemic treaty, Canadians’ travel and medication choices could be restricted, the Constitution could be suspended and it could all pave the way for a global government.

Lewis made those claims in a half-hour-long live event broadcast on Facebook and Twitter Wednesday night. They build on arguments she has made already about the dangers involved in Canada signing the World Health Organization’s Pandemic Response Treaty.

Several legal experts say her claims are completely untrue.

Russia’s laser weapon claim derided as propaganda

Russia claims to have used laser weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine, although the US says it has seen no evidence of this and Ukraine has derided it as propaganda. What are laser weapons and how effective could they be in the conflict?

Yury Borisov, the deputy prime minister in charge of military development, told Russian TV that a laser prototype called Zadira was being deployed in Ukraine and had burned up a Ukrainian drone within five seconds at a distance of 5km (three miles).
