Students are holding rallies and constructing encampments, and they have occupied college buildings. Some commentators have dismissed these actions as naïve or a flash in the pan that will soon dissipate. The lessons of history tell us that this is not likely to be the case.

Philippines seeking Canada’s help to avoid ‘great power rivalry’ between China, U.S.

OTTAWA – The foreign minister of the Philippines wants closer business and military ties with Canada, saying the two countries can help maintain the post-war order in the Indo-Pacific by maintaining peaceful relations with both the U.S. and China.

“The future of our region should not be determined by the great power rivalry,” Enrique Manalo, the secretary of foreign affairs for the Philippines said in an interview last week.

“Today’s world is a lot different than it was after the Second World War, when you had a clear distinction between the West and the East. Now, you have a much more competitive world — and our relationships are more complex.”

Lifetime ban? License suspension for car thieves could be coming to Ontario

The Ford government says it plans to suspend some driver’s licenses for people found guilty of auto theft offences in legislation set to be tabled later in the week.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria, along with Solicitor General Michael Kerzner, teased the proposed new law Tuesday, which could lead to repeat vehicle thieves having their licenses suspended for life in certain cases.

If this goes through we’ll see car theft prosecutions declared racist.

Manhunt underway in France after gunmen ambush prison van, kill guards, free inmate

At least two French prison guards were shot dead and three others seriously injured on Tuesday after heavily armed men ambushed a prison van to free an inmate, French police said, triggering a major manhunt.

The orchestrated attack, which comes amid rising drug-linked violence across Europe, took place Tuesday morning at a toll booth in Incarville in northern France. The inmate and the attackers escaped, police said.

UofT’s offer to study divestment from Israel falls short of demands, encampment organizers say

Leaders of a pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of Toronto say the university has offered to study the issue of disclosure and divestment from Israel, but the protesters say they intend to remain in place until their demands for divestment are met.

The offer to create an ad-hoc committee to study disclosure and divestment was made at a meeting with members of the university’s senior administration on Sunday, student leaders said at a news conference Monday morning.

City of Ottawa officials said Israel’s flag will be raised Tuesday in a private event to mark the country’s national day.

‘Portal’ connecting Dublin and New York attracting lewd displays

Organisers had earnest ambitions of fostering cross-Atlantic ties when they launched an art installation connecting Dublin with New York.

The Portal, which is a large circular screen that allows residents of both cities to communicate via a 24/7 live video feed, was meant to remove “borders and differences” and to “experience our world as it really is — united and one.”
