Social work is a regulated profession because its practitioners can have a substantial impact on a person’s life. They can be the difference between keeping your children in a custody dispute. Their reports can help or hurt refugee claims, or a person’s ability to obtain cosmetic gender surgery. Given the delicate issues at play, one would expect the profession to stay out of politics, but this is not the case.

As Canada grapples with a drug toxicity crisis, new research looking at four years of opioid overdose deaths in Ontario offers a revealing glimpse of the face of these victims.
The research highlights, among other things, the disproportionate impact that opioid overdoses are having on Black, Asian and Latin American drug users and raises questions about whether the province’s racialized communities are getting the help they need.
… The researchers found that when they compared the number of deaths occurring by ethno-racial group in the first quarter to the last quarter in the study period, the proportions changed. During the first quarter, July-September 2017, white people accounted for 92.6 per cent of those who died of opioid toxicity. That proportion had dropped slightly to 90.1 per cent by the last quarter of the study period. At the same time, the proportion of Asian and Latin American people dying of opioid toxicity rose to 5.9 per cent from 3.6 per cent, while the proportion of Black people who died increased marginally to four per cent from 3.9 per cent.
The most prominent Indigenous women’s organization in Canada is undergoing a federal financial audit where preliminary evidence of “ineligible expenses” was found, while facing union-busting allegations following a mass round of layoffs, CBC News has learned.

More than 400 Canadian artists from the worlds of music, film and literature are denouncing what they describe as “alarming and destructive” anti-trans legislation in an open letter released Sunday by music superstars Tegan and Sara.
The list of stars who signed the letter includes actor Elliot Page, Great Big Sea frontman Alan Doyle, actress Elisha Cuthbert, folk music legend Neil Young, recent Grammy winner Allison Russell and the two surviving members of classic children’s entertainment act Sharon, Lois and Bram.
“The anti-trans policies taking root in Canada go beyond discrimination — they present a clear risk to the mental and physical well-being of trans individuals throughout the country,” reads the letter.
