Yonge-Dundas Square, TTC stations to be renamed under new city council proposal

A controversial plan to rename all of Dundas Street appears to be off the table, replaced with a proposal to rename Yonge-Dundas Square and two subway stations that bear the 18th-century Scotsman’s name.

Coun. Chris Moise on Thursday morning tabled a proposal that would, in recognition of Henry Dundas’s role in the slave trade, direct the Yonge-Dundas Square board in collaboration with city officials, to undertake a process to rename the square by “removing the name Dundas and adopting the new name,” to be chosen by a city review committee by June 2024.

Canada: Woman with long Covid applies to be euthanized

A Canadian woman has applied to be euthanized after long Covid left her jobless and in constant pain – amid fears assisted dying has become too easy in Canada.

Tracey Thompson, 55, from Toronto, has not been able to work since catching the virus in 2020 and is so sore and fatigued she stays in bed for up to 22 hours a day.

The former chef has been robbed of the simple pleasures in life: she’s too weak to cook, too nauseous to eat and can’t listen to music, read or watch movies because her brain fog is so severe she ‘can’t process the info.’

Twice now — on Tuesday in passing a resolution calling for a “humanitarian ceasefire” in the Israel/Hamas war in Gaza — and back on Oct. 26 when it called for a “humanitarian truce” — the General Assembly deliberately avoided assigning any responsibility for the conflict to Hamas.

The Democratic mayor of Boston has sparked outrage after inviting city councilors to a holiday party intended only for ‘electeds of color.’

Michelle Wu’s invitation for the December 13 ‘Electeds of Color Holiday Party’ appeared to have been sent out to all councilors in error by her aide, Denise DosSantos.

DosSantos followed up the email 15 minutes later apologizing for the invite, clarifying that it was only meant for the city’s six councilors of color. The seven white council members were not welcome.

How Meta’s New Face Camera Heralds a New Age of Surveillance

For the past two weeks, I’ve been using a new camera to secretly snap photos and record videos of strangers in parks, on trains, inside stores and at restaurants. (I promise it was all in the name of journalism.) I wasn’t hiding the camera, but I was wearing it, and no one noticed.

I was testing the recently released $300 Ray-Ban Meta glasses that Mark Zuckerberg’s social networking empire made in collaboration with the iconic eyewear maker. The high-tech glasses include a camera for shooting photos and videos, and an array of speakers and microphones for listening to music and talking on the phone.
