Greta Thunberg pulls out of Edinburgh Book Festival over sponsor

Sponsor not pure enough according to Greta who had planned to walk across the channel to Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh International Book Festival has said it is “standing by its principles” and backed its event sponsor after Greta Thunberg accused them of “greenwashing”.

The climate activist has pulled out of an appearance at the festival later this month in protest over its sponsors Baillie Gifford, an investment firm she claims invests “heavily” in fossil fuels.

BBC apologises after presenter calls Dambusters raid ‘infamous’

The BBC has apologised after a presenter called the Second World War Dambusters raid “infamous” on its 80th anniversary in May.

Sally Nugent used the term in a BBC Breakfast segment about RAF 617 Squadron’s 1943 attack on three key dams in Germany as she reported on a flypast by Second World War bombers in May.

It prompted two viewers to complain to the corporation that the description breached accuracy and impartiality guidelines.

Fresno Lab: China’s Operation to Exterminate Americans

Prestige BioTech, a Nevada company fronting for parties in China, was caught operating an “unlicensed laboratory” in Reedley, California in March. State and Fresno County officers raided the facility, and the FBI and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have since been participating in the investigation.

The illegal operation housed white lab mice—773 live and more than 175 dead—that were genetically engineered to carry disease. Authorities also found medical waste and chemical, viral, and biological agents. There were on site at least 20 potentially infectious pathogens including those causing coronavirus, HIV, hepatitis, and herpes.

The lab is “mysterious,” as the California Globe news site proclaimed. We know enough, however, to be alarmed.

Police ‘Engaged’ as Ottawa Says Video Contains Threat Against Indian Diplomats

Ottawa says law enforcement is “engaged” after a video circulating online appeared to threaten Indian diplomats in Canada.

Public Safety Canada said in a Tuesday tweet that Ottawa will ensure the safety of all diplomats in Canada, but the department would not provide details.

It referred queries to the RCMP, which refused to confirm whether it had opened a criminal probe or say which particular video was involved.

China asks citizen spies to sign up and snoop on their neighbours

China’s all-powerful Ministry of State Security has urged the country’s citizens to take up spying to protect the country’s national security.

In its first official post on the social media platform WeChat, the ministry said it was necessary to establish a system which normalised the public’s participation in counter-espionage activities. Anyone taking part in spying efforts should be praised and rewarded by the government, it added.

A woman who stabbed a lover during sex in a Vegas hotel room to avenge a US drone strike that killed a top Iranian general has avoided jail – blaming a previous rape for her violent behavior.

Nika Nikoubin, 22, appeared at the Eighth Judicial District Court, Clark County, Nevada, on Wednesday and told the court that she is ‘aware of the gravity of my actions and the consequences they carry.’

Despite her crime – which saw the wannabe singer knife her victim in the neck – she walked free after being sentenced to no more than 36 months probation.
