Jump or be pushed: German conservatives turn on ex-Nazi hunter over race comments

“… Now, after Maassen mused in an interview about “a green-leftist race theory” that casts “whites as inferior” and promotes “immigration by Arabic and African men”, the CDU have lost patience with a man who kept doubling down on culture war tropes, making himself a cult figure on the right fringes.”

Connecticut Parents Arrested for Letting Kids, Ages 7 and 9, Walk to Dunkin’ Donuts

“I have never felt threatened by a single person in this town until meeting those officers and the social worker.”

It was Super Bowl Sunday in February 2019. Cynthia Rivers and her husband decided that their kids, ages seven and nine, deserved a long-promised treat for cleaning their rooms: the right to walk to Dunkin’ Donuts by themselves. (Reason has changed her name to protect the family’s anonymity.)

This was in Killingly, Connecticut, a suburban town in the northeast part of the state. The Rivers’ lived near an elementary school, library, state police barracks, sidewalks, crosswalks, many Victorian-style homes, and the aforementioned donut shop. The kids gathered $7, and off they went.

Veteran Ontario Liberals want Green MPP Mike Schreiner to be their leader

Some veteran Ontario Liberals want Green Leader Mike Schreiner to cross the floor and seek the leadership of the Grits — but he’s not interested.

In an open letter to Schreiner to be released Sunday, 39 Liberal activists plead with the Guelph MPP to consider entering their undeclared leadership contest.

“We are a group of Ontario Liberals who are deeply concerned about the state of politics in Ontario, and more broadly, about the future of our province and our country,” says the letter, signed by former cabinet ministers Deb Matthews, Greg Sorbara, Liz Sandals, and John Milloy as well as Kate Graham, who finished third in the 2020 Liberal leadership, MPP Lucille Collard (Ottawa-Vanier), and ex-leader Lyn McLeod.

Update: Green Leader Mike Schreiner now says he needs ‘time’ to think about joining the Liberals, but some call the plan ‘an insult’

Race storm erupts after Andrea Riseborough’s best actress Oscar nomination

The Academy Awards has found itself at the centre of race row after Andrea Riseborough’s unexpected nomination for a best actress Oscar for her performance in To Leslie, seemingly at the expense of Viola Davis for The Woman King and Danielle Deadwyler for Till.

Following the Oscars nominations announcement last Tuesday, Till director Chinonye Chukwu denounced the film industry for “upholding whiteness and perpetuating an unabashed misogyny towards Black women”, and in a lengthy comment piece in the LA Times film critic Robert Daniels wrote: “Although it’s easy to point a finger at Riseborough for taking a slot from Black women, broken systems persist when we focus our ire on individuals … what does it say that the Black women who did everything the institution asks of them – luxury dinners, private Academy screenings, meet-and-greets, splashy television spots and magazine profiles – are ignored when someone who did everything outside of the system is rewarded?”

The Horror! Apparently some white women actors didn’t vote for black actors and actually voted for a white women! GASP!

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has been slammed for cheerfully dancing in the streets during a Lunar New Year parade, as violent crime surges and major retailers abandon the Windy City’s main drag.

Her carefree dancing prompted one Chicago news outlet to blast her as “detached from reality.”

Unanswered questions from videos of Tyre Nichols’ arrest

The video footage of Tyre Nichols being beaten by police in Memphis shows in harrowing detail the events that led to his death. But some questions still remain.

Lawyers for his family said the officers acted like a “pack of wolves” and beat him “like a human pinata”.

Police Chief Cerelyn Davis, who is the first black woman to serve in the role, told the BBC she was shocked. “Something happened that we can’t explain,” she said.

The 29-year-old motorist was pulled over by police on 7 January. The footage that emerged led the authorities to fire the five officers last week and charge them with second-degree murder.

Evidently the Black officers who killed Tyre Nichols internalized white supremacy…

Vending machines with lifesaving drug grow as opioid crisis rages in US

The police chief of the small Kentucky city of Vine Grove knew from heart-rending experience why he needed a vending machine outside his office.

Kenneth Mattingly’s daughter was twice brought to the brink of death by heroin and twice pulled back by paramedics carrying an antidote, naloxone. Then Mattingly responded to an opioid overdose call early last year at which a woman saved a friend’s life because she was carrying a naloxone spray, often known by its brand name Narcan.

Canadian theater sparks outrage after announcing black-only performances

A taxpayer-funded Canadian theater organization has sparked outrage after announcing an event that will only allow “Black-identifying audiences” to attend.

The National Arts Centre in Ottawa is putting on a “Black Out” night at its Babs Asper Theatre on Feb. 17 — the middle of Black History Month — for the performance of “Is God Is,” a play written by and starring Black women.

“A Black Out is an open invitation to Black-identifying audiences to come and experience performances with their community,” the theater announced earlier this month.
