Indonesia sex ban turning off tourists but the stakes are higher for locals

At his upmarket Bali spas, Roger Paulus Silalahi has been overseeing renovations, ready to pamper tourists with herbal massages and milk baths as they return to the Indonesian holiday island after a crippling pandemic lockdown.

But last week the entrepreneur’s optimism was jolted after parliament approved a sweeping new criminal code featuring tough curbs on personal freedoms — including a ban on sex outside marriage, with a punishment of up to one year in jail.

The laws will apply to everyone — Indonesian citizens, foreign residents and tourists — in the world’s third-largest democracy and most populous Muslim nation.

Investigation Into Attacks on Power Stations Across the U.S. Continues

The attack one week ago on two substations in Moore County, N.C., resulted in the loss of power to 45,000 people and raised questions about the security of America’s power grid.

And when further attacks in North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, and Oregon were revealed, those questions have now become urgent. Are the attacks — all involving gunfire targeting substations — unrelated pranks, or are they connected to a plot of some kind?

‘I don’t care who you are!’: Groomer arrested for punching a NYPD officer after confronting protesters opposed to Drag Queen Story Hour

A Manhattan man is facing charges in relation to a violent clash at the New York Public Library, which saw him clash with protesters boycotting a drag reading event for kids, and an undercover cop that had been deployed there to keep the peace.

The incident transpired Saturday at the main branch of the Big Apple’s storied library system, where kids aged 3 to 9 had been gathered to attend a ‘Drag Story Hour’ event presided over by library officials and local drag queens.

The event, like other similar processions that have surfaced across the country, drew unwanted criticism – in this case from members of a local conservative group, who gathered as the children were sectioned off safely in another room.

The Prince, the Plot and a Long-Lost Reich

Cool Clubhouse! Schloss Waldmannsheil

Prince Heinrich XIII was arrested this week as the suspected ringleader of a plan to overthrow the German government. Nostalgic for an imperial past, he embraced far-right conspiracy theories.

The crenelated hunting lodge of Prince Heinrich XIII of Reuss sits atop a steep hill, looking out over homes laced with snow and Christmas lights in Bad Lobenstein. Popular with the local mayor and many nearby villagers, the prince spent his weekends in the spa town, giving an aristocratic flair to this sleepy corner of rural eastern Germany.

But there was a darker side to his idyll.

Heinrich XIII, prosecutors and intelligence officials say, also used his lodge to host meetings where he and a band of co-conspirators plotted to overthrow of the German government and execute the chancellor. In the basement, the group stored weapons and explosives. In the forest that sloped beneath the lodge, they sometimes held target practice.

Report From The Peoples Republic Of Karen – Ottawa Committee

PEOPLE’S COMMISSION: Prejudices and bigotry inflicted by some convoy occupiers remain, McKenney says

While “Freedom Convoy” occupiers left Ottawa months ago, the prejudices and bigotry that some of them inflicted on Centretown residents remain, Somerset Ward’s former councillor told an Ottawa People’s Commission hearing Saturday.

“The amount of transphobia that’s been left behind and racism in this city can be felt every single day,” said Catherine McKenney, who uses the pronouns they and them.

It’s a shock this woman wasn’t elected Mayor of Karenopolis.

A Greek vice-president of the European Parliament and four Italians have been arrested in Brussels by police as part of an investigation into claims the Qatari government has been trying to buy influence in the EU.

Belgian media claimed “bags of cash” had been found at the home of Eva Kaili, 44, who is a member of Greece’s left-wing Pasok party and one of the chamber’s 14 vice-presidents. The public prosecutor’s office will decide tomorrow whether the five — including a former Italian MEP and a man thought to be Kaili’s partner — will continue to be held in custody. It is not known whether they are suspects.

Convicted sex offender spews anti-Asian slurs during NYC Council meeting — and pols do nothing to stop him

“I live in Rego Park now. That’s the most racist neighborhood I’ve ever been in, and it’s nothing but Asians in there.

“If you go into a store, they will follow you around like you’re getting ready to steal something. They don’t want black people living in black people neighborhoods. Because it’s not their neighborhood, because they’re from China, they’re from Hong Kong. We from New York,” Powell said.
