Manitoba woman files proposed class action against Loblaw over alleged underweighted meat sales

A Manitoba woman, who blew the whistle on a case in which Loblaw sold underweighted meat across 80 stores in Western Canada, has filed a proposed class-action lawsuit against the grocery chain over allegations it consistently overcharges for meat and seafood by including the packaging weight in the final price tag.

Plaintiff Iris Griffin’s claim, filed in the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench last week, names Loblaw Companies Ltd., Loblaws Inc., T&T Supermarket Inc. and Provigo Distribution Inc. as defendants.

At least 20 killed in crush at US-backed GHF aid site in Gaza

At least 20 people have been killed in a crush at an aid distribution centre in southern Gaza run by the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), the organisation and a local hospital say.

The GHF said 19 were trampled to death and one was stabbed “amid a chaotic and dangerous surge” at its site in the Khan Younis area. It added that it believed people “armed and affiliated with Hamas” fomented unrest.

But Gaza’s Hamas-run Government Media Office denied the claim and accused the GHF of trying to “cover up” a crime.

John Ivison: Carney will have to cut the uncuttable — if he has the guts

Budgets in government tend to creep like mould, not ebb like the tide.

Take the example of Indigenous occupational skills training. The Department of Employment and Social Development spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year funding Indigenous third parties who deliver the training. In 2017, the department was hauled over the coals by the auditor general because it did not collect data on performance indicators to demonstrate whether it was getting Indigenous people into stable employment.

Prepare for the usual sleight of hand that places the “needs” of the usual grifters above taxpayers.

Vegan charity Viva! ad featuring baby being taken from mother banned

An ad for vegan charity Viva! featuring scenes of a human baby being taken from its mother to protest against the treatment of dairy calves has been banned for irresponsible, distressing and likely to cause widespread offence.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said the cinema ad, which drew on the conventions of horror films, would have been particularly distressing for viewers who had experienced the loss of a child.

The ad, seen in March and April 2025, featured a mother placing her sleeping baby in a cot while a lullaby played before a silhouetted figure suddenly appeared standing over the infant and the room went dark.

Free speech under threat as Britons believe they can no longer speak their mind

Older, white males without university education feel most restricted in what they can say, study finds

Free speech is under threat because Britons feel they cannot speak out for fear of offending others over race, religion and immigration, a study has found.

Nearly half of those polled (49 per cent) believe people are too easily offended, particularly if they speak out on race and immigration issues, according to research for the Commission for Countering Extremism, which advises the Government.

The more outspoken people’s views, the more likely they were to feel constrained by the risk of offending others. Older, white males without a university education are among the groups who feel the most restricted.

Nanaimo Considering Fence Around City Hall to Protect Staff From Drug Consumption Site Disorder

The B.C. city of Nanaimo is proposing to build a fence around its city hall parking lot to protect staff from violence and disorder associated with “congregations” of people who frequent a supervised drug consumption site located next to the city’s parking lot.

City staff have proposed a 1.83-metre-high fence, which will cost an estimated $412,000 to install, due to concerns from employees about “intimidation and harassment.” Staff say the risk is higher for those working early or late, citing damage to staff vehicles, fires near the city hall building, including in doorways, as well as human waste and an overall deterioration of the area.

Trump ‘not encouraging killing’ by asking if Zelensky could bomb Moscow

President Trump mentioned possible Ukrainian strikes on Moscow to President Zelensky before he approved US arms supplies, but he was “not encouraging further killing”, the White House has said.

His spokeswoman was responding to media reports that he had asked Zelensky why Kyiv’s forces had not hit Moscow and St Petersburg, Russia’s biggest and richest cities.

“Volodymyr, can you hit Moscow? Can you hit St Petersburg too?” Trump had asked, according to the Financial Times, which cited sources familiar with the call. “Absolutely. We can if you give us the weapons,” Zelensky replied.
