Post-Mulroney, the Conservatives’ brand is ‘loser.’ It’s time for an overhaul

How have Conservatives fared since making the big swerve rightward in the early 1990s?

We recall that under Brian Mulroney’s Progressive Conservative banner they won majority governments in 1984 and 1988. Then along came the dividers, the ideologues of the Reform Party, who grabbed

52 seats in the 1993 election and then proceeded to swallow the old Tories whole.

And the rest is history – a primarily painful party history. Since the late Mr. Mulroney’s departure from the party leadership in 1993, the Liberals have won eight elections to the Conservatives’ three.

Did The Palestinian Authority President Really Condemn the Hamas Attack of October 7, 2023?

France claimed this month that Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas had condemned the invasion of Israel on October 7, 2023 by Hamas, the Iran-backed terrorist group. During the attack, Hamas terrorists and other Palestinians murdered 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, wounded thousands. They kidnapped another 251 people to the Gaza Strip, where 52 – dead and alive – remain in captivity.

Paris said in a statement that the purported condemnation was included in a letter Abbas sent to France on the eve of a United Nations conference in New York, scheduled for this month, to push for recognizing the establishment of a Palestinian state. The conference is to be co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.

Wait times for major surgeries are getting longer, new data shows

Five years on from the COVID-19 pandemic, wait times for key surgeries have yet to bounce back, new data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) shows.

Released Thursday, the data set tracks wait times for “priority procedures” such as hip and knee replacements, cataract surgeries, cancer treatments including radiation therapy, and diagnostic imaging like MRI and CT scans.

While the total count of scheduled procedures has risen for some since 2019, the numbers show, Canadian patients are often still waiting longer to get them than before the pandemic began.

Israel preparing to strike Iran, US officials told

American officials have been told that Israel is “fully ready” to launch an operation into Iran and anticipates that Iran could retaliate on US sites in neighbouring Iraq.

CBS News reported that Israel was poised to begin an operation in Iran, prompting the United States to scale down its embassy staff in the Middle East. Further reports suggest that Israel is preparing an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The partial withdrawal was announced by President Trump, who said he was less confident now that negotiations with Iran on a nuclear deal would succeed.

Pride Toronto forges ahead with $900K shortfall while looking for more sponsors

Pride Toronto’s shortfall has increased to $900,000 — a jump from $700,000 10 days ago — due, in part, to such corporate sponsors as Google, Nissan, and Home Depot pulling out.

But the organization’s executive director Kojo Modeste is hoping others will still come on board — including the province and the feds — with other sponsors like The Ballroom, No Frills, Shoppers Drug Mart and SEIU Healthcare Union now stepping up to the plate.

Karoline Leavitt Goes Beast Mode on Reporter Defending Violent Rioters

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt came out swinging Tuesday, delivering a sharp and unapologetic rebuke to a reporter who seemed more interested in political theater than the brutal reality unfolding on the streets of Los Angeles. During a tense back-and-forth in the briefing room, Leavitt swiftly dismantled the reporter’s attempt to reframe the ongoing anti-ICE riots as mostly “peaceful protests,” making it clear that the administration isn’t buying the media’s favorite narrative. While Los Angeles burns and law enforcement officers are under siege, the reporter seemed preoccupied with downplaying the violence.

G7: Why there is hope of a Carney-Trump tariff breakthrough at Alberta summit

Global trade will be a major focus at next week’s G7 summit as world leaders gather in Alberta, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who will be making his first appearance at a major international event since returning to the White House in January.

Experts and ambassadors are expressing some optimism that this type of event could be a difference-maker in convincing Trump to reduce the amount of tariffs charged on imports to the U.S.

Any possible concessions on the trade front would be welcomed by countries such as Canada, that are facing economic hardship because of tariffs.

Josh Dehaas: Canadian cities are clamping down on free speech

With all the problems facing municipalities, from parks that look like refugee camps to potholes that can swallow a Mini Cooper, you’d think city councillors would have better things to do than dream up new ways to limit free expression.

Yet in the past few years, city councils throughout the country have created new restrictions on speech in council meetings, in streets, in parks, even in backyards. Many of these restrictions violate the Charter. The Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF) is fighting back through litigation, with our new report on “Canada’s Most Censorious Bylaws” and with our new Municipal Muzzle Award for the city with the worst restriction.

Carney and Islamophobia Tsar – gets assurance daughter won’t be tossed off roof.

Canada has been “jolted awake” by new threats to its security and sovereignty, “including from an emboldened Russia and an assertive China,” Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister, said in a June 9 speech on defense spending.

“Russia’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine shattered previous assumptions of European post-Cold War security, leading to sharp reappraisals of the costs of collective responsibility and underscoring how precious and precarious are international law, sovereignty, territorial integrity and human rights,” he said.
