Inside the Push for Stronger Safeguards on Sexually Explicit Content in Canadian School Libraries

Two years ago, Raelyn Fox found a book in her daughter’s bedroom that caused her concern. Her 11-year-old always kept a stack of library books on the dresser, and until then, Fox hadn’t thought much about what was in them.

But after hearing news about parents raising concerns over age-inappropriate content in school library books, and coming across online lists of flagged titles, Fox, who lives in southern rural Manitoba, decided to take a closer look. Two of the flagged books were in her daughter’s bedroom.

Nate Silver on Why Young Men Are Leaving Democratic Party

Rosa DeLauro

If you spend any amount of time on X, it’s impossible to miss the pattern.

Democrats are angry. Depressed. They scream at the camera. They fantasize about violence against “oppressors.” They film themselves weeping, wailing, and gnashing their teeth. Just as you can be reasonably certain that anybody who flies an American flag is a Republican, you can be equally confident that everybody who wears a mask in 2025 (or back in 2024, 2023, or 2022) is a strong Democrat.

Conservative fundraiser casts doubt on whether all votes were ‘accurate and counted’ in leaked call

A caller raising money for the Conservative Party cast doubt on the validity of the recount process in the recent federal election, according to a recording obtained by CBC News.

In the fundraising call, which happened on Saturday, an official identifying herself as being from the Conservative Party’s supporter services claimed that Liberals and media seek to “attack” Conservatives and “scrutinize” the results of two judicial recounts won by Conservatives.

Later in the call, she suggested to a potential donor that the results of the recounts were not final.

Dutch government on the brink after Geert Wilders pulls out of coalition

The Dutch government faces collapse after Geert Wilders announced on Tuesday morning that his hard-right Party for Freedom (PVV) has pulled out of the country’s fractious conservative coalition.

On Monday night a coalition meeting failed to agree on tough asylum demands from Wilders, which would breach European Union law. Emergency talks on Tuesday to resolve the situation lasted minutes.

“No signature for our asylum plans,” Wilders said on social media. “PVV leaves the coalition.”

First Nations don’t have a veto over nation-building projects, Mark Carney’s justice minister says

OTTAWA—Justice Minister Sean Fraser says the federal duty to consult and engage Indigenous people on major nation-building projects does not amount to granting those communities a veto.

After the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) warned Prime Minister Mark Carney he must secure Indigenous Peoples’ consent to his plans to expedite massive infrastructure projects, citing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, Fraser said the legal duty under that declaration is viewed by international experts and the current government as limited.

Mexican Cartels Expanding Operations in Canada, Using Indigenous Reserves as Factory Hubs

With Factories on Six Nations Land, Mexican Cartels Are Using Canada to Smuggle Counterfeit Goods Into the U.S. and Mexico

OTTAWA — “Project Panda,” a major Ontario gang taskforce takedown in May targeting a counterfeit tobacco factory on the Six Nations Reserve near Hamilton and Buffalo, exposes a long-ignored reality: Mexican cartel networks have deeply embedded themselves in Canadian territory near the U.S. border—and are expanding in tandem with Chinese state-linked crime partners, using Indigenous land for counterfeit production and cross-border smuggling.

This is no longer just a policing matter. It is a national security crisis—one that exploits Indigenous communities, land, and jurisdictional protections that have inadvertently shielded criminal networks now designated as terrorist threats. Worse still, the threat has long been known to Canadian, American, and Mexican authorities. Yet Ottawa has failed to act.

Trump orders investigation into Biden’s ‘autopen’ pardons

Donald Trump has ordered an investigation into the pardons granted by Joe Biden to family members and death row inmates which were signed by “autopen” in the final hours of his presidency.

On Monday, a senior official in the justice department told staff that he was investigating pardons granted by the former president, and whether Mr Biden was “competent” at the time.

In an email to staff, obtained by Reuters, Ed Martin, a controversial Trump loyalist, said his investigation would look at whether Mr Biden “was competent and whether others were taking advantage of him through use of autopen or other means”.

Toronto man accused of supplying Russia’s drone program is 1st to face prosecution over sanctions

On May 9, Russian troops paraded their tanks, armoured vehicles and missiles through Red Square, past the man who sent them to war in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin.

The Victory Day procession in Moscow also showcased, for the first time, the military drones that have proven indispensable to Putin’s invasion. But Russian drones are not really Russian on the inside.

They are built out of electronics purchased around the world by a global procurement network that allegedly relies on suppliers in several countries, including Canada.

“I recently made a commitment that my wealth will be given away over the next 20 years. The majority of that funding will be spent on helping you address challenges here in Africa,” Gates said as he urged leaders to boost health and development through partnership and innovation.

RCMP says it’s probing potential war crimes related to Israel-Hamas conflict

The RCMP says it is investigating potential war crimes related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Very few details of the RCMP’s probe into what it called the “Israel-Hamas armed conflict” are known, with the police service confirming the investigation to the Star on Monday, but refusing to answer questions about its scope.

The RCMP launched the investigation quietly in early 2024. The lack of announcement stands in stark contrast to the agency’s probe into alleged war crimes in Ukraine, which has involved a hotline and dedicated webpage, media interviews, online advertising, signs erected at airports and questionnaires distributed in an attempt to collect witness testimony from fleeing Ukrainians.

Will the findings ever see the light of day?

Mohammed Sabry Soliman planned Boulder Colorado fire attack for a year, FBI says

A man accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at demonstrators attending a march for Israeli hostages in Colorado on Sunday planned the attack for a year, investigators say.

Mohammed Sabry Soliman, 45, who is charged with a federal hate crime as well as state charges of attempted murder, assault and use of an explosive device, made a brief appearance in court on Monday.

Officials say the Egyptian national targeted a group of pro-Israel protesters at an outdoor mall in Boulder and shouted “Free Palestine” as he threw incendiary devices, injuring eight of them.
