Mark Carney’s cabinet change is a mirage

From a distance, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new cabinet looks like change.

It’s structured differently; there are 28 full ministers and 10 secretaries of state, the latter of whom will have smaller departments, smaller salaries and will only occasionally sit at the cabinet table.

There are new faces; more than half of the people comprising this cabinet have never been ministers in the federal government.

Zelensky ‘will only negotiate peace deal with Putin’ in Istanbul

President Zelensky will meet only with President Putin in Istanbul for direct talks on the war, a Ukrainian presidential adviser has said.

“Only Putin can decide whether the war continues or ends. That’s indisputable,” Mykhailo Podolyak told Russian opposition journalists, ruling out talks between Zelensky and Russian ministers or negotiators.

“We understand how power is structured in Russia,” Podolyak said. “It’s clear that even people with formal ministerial status — or even someone like [the prime minister, Mikhail] Mishustin — are unlikely to be authorised to make key decisions.”

Three federal ridings await final recount results after razor-thin election margins

Judicial recounts are still underway in three federal ridings where April 28 election results were determined by narrow vote margins, with one finalized recount in Terrebonne, Quebec, resulting in a one-vote Liberal win — the slimmest federal race outcome in over 60 years.

Superior Court Justice Garrett Handrigan is overseeing a recount in Terra Nova–The Peninsulas, Newfoundland and Labrador, where the Liberals were ahead by only 12 votes on election night — the closest margin nationally.

Sweden: Time to “Wake Up” to Dangers of New Gender Legislation

A new law set to come into effect on July 1st will make it easier for Swedes to legally change their gender, with reports claiming that a single digital healthcare ‘visit’ will suffice.

Christian Democrats politician Christian Carlsson said it was “incomprehensible” that only his party and the Sweden Democrats tried to stop the legislation from moving forward last year, “and that this spring we were the only ones who tried to have the new law repealed before it takes effect.”

Michael Higgins: Carney’s cabinet of Trudeau failures

Prime Minister Mark Carney promised change, a new way of doing things at speeds never before seen. Yet to help him do this, he is relying on the same old, tired, incompetent ministers who got us into the mess we’re currently in.

The Liberals will trumpet the large number of new faces in Carney’s 28-member cabinet — there are 15 MPs who have never served before.

Pro-Beijing Diaspora Group That Lobbied to Oust O’Toole Now Calls for Poilievre’s Resignation Amid PRC Interference Probes

MARKHAM — A controversial diaspora pressure group with ties to Chinese consular circles in Toronto is demanding that Pierre Poilievre step down, following an election marked by Beijing’s attacks on Conservative candidates, and renewing the same type of challenge it posed to former leader Erin O’Toole, which first drew national security attention after the 2021 federal contest.

What’s ‘free market’ about Americans paying the tab for the rest of the world’s prescription drugs?

Monday saw a seismic economic shift courtesy of an executive order by President Trump cramming down the prices Americans pay for prescription drugs.

I had no idea that Big Pharma made 2/3 of its profits from the US who are only 4% of the world’s population.

The Guardian – Fear and surveillance in the US-Mexico borderlands: ‘There’s a lot more open hate’

The president’s migrant crackdown has fueled an increasingly angry atmosphere – and some border agents are praising ‘Daddy Trump’

Osvaldo Ruiz and a friend were hiking through an isolated stretch of mountains, just a few miles from the sprawling US-Mexico border wall that fringes San Diego, when the federal agent stopped them in their tracks.

It was late March, mid-morning, and Ruiz, who works for a local non-profit called Border Angels, was busy. That day he was scouting a new route where his group could leave life-saving water and food for the sporadic waves of migrants who still cross through these desolate borderlands. Ruiz and his friend, a fellow Border Angels member, already knew they were being watched. A helicopter had been buzzing overhead for the past several hours, tracking them.

Shortly after the duo sat down for a mid-hike coffee break, the border patrol agent appeared on the trail. Four or five other officers lagged behind him in the distance.

Canada’s electric vehicle strategy has failed, and there are lessons to learn

We must face an uncomfortable truth: Canada’s automotive and EV manufacturing strategy, touted as a generational opportunity to drive economic growth, jobs and environmental leadership, has failed quickly and dramatically.

The federal and Quebec governments made a bad $4.6-billion dollar bet on Northvolt, a Swedish EV battery manufacturer, which has entered bankruptcy less than two years since a $7-billion investment announcement. The $270-million invested by Quebec in Northvolt’s parent company in Sweden is now “lost,” confirmed the provincial government in March.
