Israel to ‘seize more ground’ and warns Hamas it will annex parts of Gaza

Israel’s defence minister said on Friday he had instructed the military to “seize more ground” in Gaza and threatened to annex part of the territory unless Hamas released 59 Israeli hostages still held by the Islamist militant group in the devastated territory.

Israel Katz’s warning came as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intensified the new offensive launched on Tuesday, when a wave of airstrikes shattered the truce that had brought a fragile and relative calm since mid-January.

Further “non-stop” attacks took place overnight across much of Gaza. “It’s all day and all night. Drones, planes, artillery, tanks … all the time. It’s as bad as it’s ever been,” said one aid worker now based in Gaza City.

U.S. researchers have found what they say is a late draft of a secret list of more than 700 suspected Nazi war criminals believed to have settled in Canada after the Second World War, prompting fresh calls for the federal government to finally unseal and release the full list.

A research team led by UCLA historian Jared McBride, an expert on war crimes in the Second World War, has unearthed what he concludes is an annotated version of the list of alleged war criminals in this country examined by a 1986 Commission of Inquiry led by retired Superior Court of Quebec judge Jules Deschênes.

Every inch of the area will be subjected to a bank of forensic checks as will all CCTV and communications for miles around.

The reason is simple: the fire has all the hallmarks of Russian state-sponsored terrorism – a hybrid form of war that has been raging in Europe for more than three years now.

The back up generator was also affected. Perhaps the real killer is the Lithium Batteries and not Putin.

More than 80 Teslas had their tires punctured and bodies scratched at a lot in Hamilton, Ontario, the police said on Thursday. Several acts of vandalism against Tesla property have also been committed in the United States.

Ukraine’s ‘chaotic’ withdrawal from Russia, in its soldiers’ words

Until just over a week ago, Artem Kariakin and his unit were making regular trips across Ukraine’s border into the Russian town of Sudzha.

He shows me video taken with a phone of their very last trip, as Ukrainian forces retreated from Russia’s Kursk region. It shows them making their way past dozens of burnt out military and civilian vehicles.

A soldier armed with a shotgun, their last line of defence, scans the horizon for Russian drones. Out of nowhere, one flies towards the back of their truck. Sparks fly, but they keep on going.

Artem says they were lucky – the explosive charge was not big enough to stop them.

Mark Carney will continue to screw over oil and gas producers with emissions cap, environment minister says

OTTAWA — A Mark Carney government will maintain the cap on emissions from the production of oil and gas, Environment Minister Terry Duguid said in a recent interview.

Under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, the Liberals promised in the 2021 election to cap emissions from oil and gas and began the process to regulate the cap a year later.

A group of 14 energy CEOs have written a letter to all major federal parties urging them to declare an “energy crisis” in Canada and use emergency powers to relax regulations within the industry and increase production levels.

The CEOs, who represent the 10 largest oil and gas companies and four largest pipeline companies in Canada, suggest several measures to support oil and natural gas investment and “remove the barriers we have imposed on ourselves over time.”

How can we feel as if we’re all in it together when we plainly aren’t?

There are many reasons to feel pessimistic about Britain under Keir Starmer. A stagnating economy. An ageing society which talented young people want to leave. Large numbers of people invading the country illegally via small boats: and the government hiring yet more hotels to accommodate them.

But maybe the most concerning thing of all is the fraying of any sense of national identity.
