Toronto details plan to fight Donald Trump’s tariffs, as mayor appears on CNN: ‘Stop this nonsense’

Mayor Olivia Chow’s plan to counter Donald Trump’s tariffs includes deferring property taxes for struggling businesses, partnering with nearby municipalities and banning U.S. companies from bidding on some city contracts.

Poilievre says he’ll scrap carbon levy on industrial emitters and consumers if elected defeating Carney’s lie

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he will scrap the carbon levy on industrial emitters as well as the consumer carbon levy.

In video statement released Monday, Mr. Poilievre says if elected to govern in the upcoming election, his government would repeal the entire carbon price law, including the tax on Canadian businesses and industries.

This means there would not be a levy on Canadian steel, aluminum, food production, concrete and other industries, he said.

‘Everything is finished’: Ukrainian troops relive retreat from Kursk

Ukrainian soldiers fighting in Russia’s Kursk region have described scenes “like a horror movie” as they retreated from the front lines.

The BBC has received extensive accounts from Ukrainian troops, who recount a “catastrophic” withdrawal in the face of heavy fire, and columns of military equipment destroyed and constant attacks from swarms of Russian drones.

The soldiers, who spoke over social media, were given aliases to protect their identity. Some gave accounts of a “collapse” as Ukraine lost Sudzha, the largest town it held.

Why is Trump doing this? There are two harsh realities Canada must face

U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs — first threatened, then postponed, now applied to steel and aluminum — are a hostile act against a friend and ally.

They upend the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement. They violate basic principles of the World Trade Organization and postwar General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, which itself grew out successive U.S. tariff reductions after 1934.

If Washington continues with this obnoxious policy, more Canadian goods will face punitive surcharges at a time when only 30 per cent of U.S. imports are tariffed at all.

Canada: A Sign of Things to Come

Canada is not the 51st state. While Trump keeps talking about it, I’m sincerely hoping this is just him trolling, because I sure as heck don’t want Canada to have any say in American politics.

The last thing we need is yet another anti-gun state in the nation, especially when I’m still kind of hoping Denmark buys California.

This is the weirdest timeline ever.

Smells stupid & racist: Renaming group dismissive of Dundas, consulting public

If you don’t like Sankofa Square, how would you feel about Sankofa Street?

A freedom-of-information request, shared with The Toronto Sun by a reader, sheds light on the work done to rename Yonge-Dundas Square. Some of the documents, from late 2023, reveal talk of a non-existent consultation process and a loose approach to facts regarding historical figures such as Henry Dundas and 19th-century activist Lucie Blackburn.

Peace deal must bar Ukraine from Nato, Russian official says

Russia will seek guarantees that Nato will exclude Ukraine from membership and that Ukraine will remain neutral in any peace deal, a Russian deputy foreign minister said.

“We will demand that ironclad security guarantees become part of this agreement,” Alexander Grushko told Russian media outlet Izvestia.

“Part of these guarantees should be the neutral status of Ukraine, the refusal of Nato countries to accept it into the alliance,” he said.

Michael Taube: If you think Carney will be different from Trudeau, you’re mistaken

“Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” This memorable line from The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” has been used in various ways for over 50 years. As Mark Carney, the newly-elected Liberal leader and now prime minister takes over from Justin Trudeau, we can add this side-by-side comparison to the discussion.

For if you think the former Bank of England and Bank of Canada governor will be vastly different from his predecessor, you’re only fooling yourself.

This Is the Strongest Case for Trump’s Tariffs I’ve Heard Yet

Donald Trump’s tariff policies remain a lightning rod for debate. Democrats are sounding the alarm, warning of dire economic fallout and painting a picture of looming catastrophe.

Batya Ungar-Sargon, deputy opinion editor of Newsweek, made one of the strongest, most effective cases yet for former President Donald Trump’s tariffs during the latest episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher.” She broke down exactly why these tariffs are necessary, and by the end, she left Bill Maher flustered.

Same “Canadian Super Patriots” hating Trumps tariffs shipped your jobs offshore then flooded Canada with cheap foreign labour to ensure you remained impoverished and grateful for the pittance they pay for the rest.

Jagmeet Singh says NDP would cancel F-35 contract and build fighters in Canada

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced Sunday his party would cancel Canada’s contract to buy U.S.-built F-35s and look for companies to build fighter jets in Canada — a proposal that some defence experts say comes with steep costs.

“Purchasing from the [United] States at this time is not in our national security interest,” Singh told reporters in Iqaluit just days after Defence Minister Bill Blair said Canada is reconsidering its F-35 purchase amid tensions with Washington.
