Doug Ford makes good on threat to slap 25 per cent export tax on electricity to the U.S.

Premier Doug Ford has made good on his threat to slap a 25 per cent surcharge on electricity sold to the U.S. in retaliation for President Donald Trump‘s tariffs.

Raising an estimated $300,000 to $400,000 per day, the “tariff response charge” will be paid by utilities in New York, Michigan and Minnesota importing power from generators of electricity in Ontario.

Purge of USAID programs complete, with 83% of agency’s programs gone

Washington — Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday the Trump administration had finished its six-week purge of programs of the six-decade-old U.S. Agency for International Development, and said he would move the 18% of aid and development programs that survived under the State Department.

Rubio made the announcement in a post on X. It marked one of his relatively few public comments on what has been a historic shift away from U.S. foreign aid and development, executed by Trump political appointees at State and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency teams.

Musk and Rubio spar with Polish minister over Starlink in Ukraine

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Elon Musk have clashed with Poland’s foreign minister over the use of the tech billionaire’s Starlink satellite internet system in Ukraine.

Musk said on X that Ukraine’s “entire front line” would collapse if he turned the system off. Radoslaw Sikorski responded, saying his country paid for its use in Ukraine and a threat to shut it down would result in a search for another network.

Rubio dismissed Sikorski’s claims and told him to be grateful, while Musk called him a “small man”.

Terry Newman: How fast will Carney flee if he loses election?

On Sunday evening in Ottawa, the results of the Liberal leadership race were announced. To no one’s surprise, Mark Carney won, receiving 85.9 per cent of the vote. But Carney didn’t just win the party’s leadership race, he won the highest seat in our government, without ever being elected by Canadians, not even as a member of Parliament.

Liberals send off Trudeau, welcome Carney in a strange, wistful, forgetful event

The Liberal Party’s leadership announcement on Sunday night kicked off with a brief video chronicling “157 years of history” for the party. It travelled from grainy long-ago moments rendered in black and white to a sleeves-rolled-up Justin Trudeau reaching out to a surging crowd, which itself feels like a million political years ago.

Already, the Prime Minister belonged to the party’s history books, not to its present.

Rural Alberta’s solar sinkhole: economic lifeline or environmental cowpie?

The tiny hamlet of Caroline, home to just 500 residents northwest of Calgary, is at the centre of a growing debate over how rural communities can balance much-needed tax revenue with the desire to preserve their unique way of life.

At issue is a proposed 57-acre, 14-megawatt solar farm that supporters hail as an economic lifeline, but opponents fear could alter the character of the village forever. The project, which buts up to the northern border, is almost the size of the town itself.
