Ontario overhauls MAID oversight committee, critics say it’s to remove dissenters

Ontario is overhauling its body that reviews complex medically assisted deaths, narrowing its membership, scaling back its scope and shifting its role away from independent oversight toward supporting the system it is meant to scrutinize, according to documents obtained by The Globe and Mail.

Two former members say the proposed new version of the committee is designed to be less rigorous and to provide less oversight.

CBC investigation finds grocers Loblaw, Sobeys overcharging for underweight meat — again

A CBC News secret shopping investigation has uncovered — once again — several Loblaw-owned and Sobeys-affiliated stores overcharging for underweight meat, despite claims last year the grocery giants had taken steps to rectify the problem.

“People are getting ripped off,” said Terri Lee, a former inspector with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Lee, who spent 24 years with the federal food regulator before retiring in 2021, estimates misweighed meat costs Canadian shoppers millions of dollars annually.

China calls US Hormuz blockade ‘dangerous and irresponsible’

China calls US Hormuz blockade ‘dangerous and irresponsible’

America’s blockade in the Strait of Hormuz is “dangerous and irresponsible,” a spokesman from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.

The Chinese official argued that the U.S. blockade, which is only related to vessels going to or from Iranian ports, risks undermining “an already fragile ceasefire.”

“This will only aggravate confrontation, escalate tension, undermine the already fragile ceasefire, and further jeopardize safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. It is a dangerous and irresponsible move,” Guo Jiakun said.

Carney temporarily suspending federal fuel excise tax on gas, diesel and aviation fuel

A day after sweeping three byelections in Ontario and Quebec that gave him a majority in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that he is temporarily removing the federal excise tax on gas and diesel.

The move means that the cost of gas will drop by ten cents on a litre of gasoline and four cents per litre of diesel starting Monday and lasting until Labour Day.

The fuel tax holiday, which Carney said would also see the four cent per litre excise tax removed on aviation fuel, is expected to cost an estimated $2.4 billion.

Peace with Iran hinges on one side bowing to the other’s nuclear demands

Peace with Iran hinges on one side bowing to the other’s nuclear demands

President Donald Trump has maintained that increased U.S. pressure on Iran, including a blockade of its oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, will eventually force the regime to give in to his demand that it will “never have a nuclear weapon.”

Calling Tehran’s refusal to make that promise the sticking point that led to failure at last weekend’s negotiations in Islamabad, Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday that he was confident he would prevail. “We agreed to a lot of things, but they didn’t agree to that,” he said of the nuclear pledge. “I think they will agree to it. I’m almost sure of it. In fact, I am sure of it.”

Saudi Arabia Is Pressing U.S. to Drop Its Hormuz Blockade

Saudi Arabia Is Pressing U.S. to Drop Its Hormuz Blockade

Saudi Arabia is pressing the U.S. to drop its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and return to the negotiating table, fearing President Trump’s move to close it off could lead Iran to escalate and disrupt other important shipping routes, Arab officials said.

The blockade is aimed at raising the pressure on Iran’s already crippled economy. But the officials said Saudi Arabia has warned Iran might retaliate by closing the Bab al-Mandeb—a Red Sea chokepoint crucial for the kingdom’s remaining oil exports.

The pushback is a sign of the risks and limitations of U.S. efforts to pry open the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran shut early in the war by attacking ships in the waterway, cutting off around 13 million barrels a day in oil exports and sending futures prices above $100 a barrel.

I was just getting used to Strait Of Hormuz and now this “Bab al-Mandeb”.

Man fined $70K after dozens of foreign nationals found working illegally in Banff

An Ontario man has been fined $70,000 and sentenced to two years of probation and 50 hours of community service after dozens of foreign nationals from Mexico were found illegally working in the Banff area.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and RCMP launched an investigation into suspected illegal immigration activity in June 2022, eventually identifying a group of people travelling from Ontario to Alberta to work illegally in the hospitality industry in Banff National Park.

70K? Just the cost of doing business. What’s needed is jail and asset forfeiture.

Iran secures UN role with backing from UK, France, Canada, Australia as US stands alone

Western democracies, including the UK, France, Canada and Australia, are facing backlash after allowing Iran and other authoritarian regimes to secure seats on influential United Nations (U.N.) bodies, with the United States standing alone in opposition.

The controversy stems from decisions by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), a 54-member body that plays a central role in shaping U.N. policy and staffing key committees.

Critics warn the outcome could allow governments accused of human rights abuses to influence global policy and control which civil society groups are granted access to the United Nations.

Tasha Kheiriddin: Get ready for Mark Carney unencumbered

Prime Minister Mark Carney has secured the first Liberal government since 2019. That’s right — in case you hadn’t noticed, Canada has been operating under minority governments for seven years. Two were won by Justin Trudeau in 2019 and 2021, one by Carney in 2025. Trudeau’s minorities necessitated significant compromise with the NDP; from 2021 until the fall of 2024, he was bound by a supply and confidence agreement with then NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, who extracted a series of concessions on childcare, dental care, and pharmacare.
