KOLGA: Restoring pride in Canada’s military essential to democracy

During every Canadian NHL game, there’s a ritual where fans rise between periods and acknowledge members of Canada’s Armed Forces. But what began as a heartfelt gesture after 9/11 has devolved into an empty routine.

The slow, almost reluctant rise of audiences today reflects a troubling and growing apathy among Canadians toward our Armed Forces and Canada’s role in the world.

Turning the CAF into a haven for cross-dressers may have affected public perception.

NBC Skips March For Life, ABC and CBS Give It 48 Seconds

A charitable analysis of ABC, NBC, and CBS’s Friday evening and Saturday morning broadcasts would find that the six shows combined to give the 52nd annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., a measly 48 seconds of coverage.

Defence minister accelerates 2% NATO spending timeline to 2027 amid pressure from Trump

Facing U.S. President Donald Trump’s ongoing criticism about military spending, Defence Minister Bill Blair says it’s “absolutely achievable” for Canada to meet NATO’s military investment benchmark of two per cent of gross domestic product within two years.

That accelerated timeline to hit the target by 2027 is about five years earlier than what prime minister Justin Trudeau announced in July.

“My goal is to do it as quickly as possible and I’m increasingly confident we’ll be able to,” Blair said in response to questions from CBC News.

NDP Crank Charlie Angus calls for investigation into Elon Musk over potential election interference

New Democrat MP Charlie Angus is calling on Elections Canada to launch an investigation into Elon Musk and his social media platform X, saying he is concerned about potential interference by the tech billionaire in the next federal election.

In a two-page letter to Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault, Angus said Musk has been playing a role in recent elections in a variety of countries, donating millions of dollars to conservative candidates and using X, formerly known as Twitter, to amplify the political messages of candidates he favours.

“He has formed alliances with right-wing populist leaders, amplified extremist influencers and spread hate disinformation towards marginal groups,” Angus wrote.

And of course the CBC ran with the Musk Hitler Not Hitler really pic.

Randall Denley: Ford wants an anti-Trump election. He might not get it

Only Doug Ford can save Ontarians from Donald Trump, but he can’t do it unless people give him a really big mandate, right now. That’s the premise of the Feb. 27 provincial election that the premier on Friday confirmed he’ll be calling next week.

The very future of the province, perhaps even the country, hangs on the magnitude of the majority Ford gets next month, he contended at a Brampton press conference. He wants “the largest mandate in Ontario’s history.”

Trudeau pulled the Liberals left. Where do they go from here?

When Chrystia Freeland proposed raising taxes on capital gains last April, she pitched the change — and related promises to invest in dental care, school food programs and housing — in starkly moral terms.

“Before they complain too bitterly, I would like Canada’s one per cent — Canada’s 0.1 per cent — to consider this: What kind of Canada do you want to live in?” she asked in what would turn out to be her last budget speech. “Do you want to live in a country where those at the very top live lives of luxury — but must do so in gated communities, behind ever higher fences, using private health care and airplanes, because the public sphere is so degraded and the wrath of the vast majority of their less privileged compatriots burns so hot?”

Denmark in ‘crisis mode’ after ‘horrendous’ phone call from Trump demanding to buy Greenland

Denmark is in “crisis mode” after Donald Trump made a direct play for Greenland in a “horrendous” phone call with the country’s prime minister.

The US president spoke to Mette Frederiksen, the Danish premier, for 45 minutes last week and made clear he wanted to place Greenland under American control.

The autonomous Arctic territory has been owned by Denmark since 1814, but Mr Trump thinks it would be a valuable asset in the US’s strategic competition against Russia and China.

Don Braid: Mark Carney is a climate zealot who won’t back off the Trudeau agenda

Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney might appear flexible on the carbon tax, but don’t get your hopes up.

The former Bank of Canada governor is a climate activist of the most devoted and determined sort. He has done more thinking and writing about climate change than the rest of the Trudeau caucus combined.

In 2021, Carney published a boat-anchor book called Values.

Putin says Ukrainian ‘crisis’ could have been avoided if Trump ‘had not been deprived of election win’ and says he is ‘ready’ to discuss the war with the president

Vladimir Putin today declared that the war in Ukraine could have been averted had Donald Trump not been ‘robbed of the election’ in 2020.

Describing his armed forces’ full-scale invasion of their neighbour in February 2022 as a ‘crisis’, Putin told state media the horrific bloodshed that has blighted eastern Europe for almost three years would not have happened under a Trump presidency.

‘I cannot but agree with him that if he had been president, if his victory had not been stolen from him in 2020, then perhaps there would not have been the crisis in Ukraine that arose in 2022,’ the Russian president said.

Canada is losing the war for American hearts and minds. We’re barely even fighting

A

As a wise Canadian once put it, you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. And when it comes to the partnership with Canada, the average American has no idea what they’ve got.

Before President Donald Trump drives his tariff bulldozer through paradise, Canada needs to launch a crash program of talking to Americans about the world’s most successful economic relationship and friendship, what will happen when it’s gone, and how much that will cost them.

With a PM like Trudeau it’s a wonder they let any of us cross the border.

US orders halt to virtually all foreign aid except for Israel and Egypt

The secretary of state, Marco Rubio, has ordered a halt to virtually all US foreign aid, but made an exception for funding to Israel and Egypt, according to an internal memo to staff at the US state department.

“No new funds shall be obligated for new awards or extensions of existing awards until each proposed new award or extension has been reviewed and approved … as consistent with President Trump’s agenda,” said the memo.

The sweeping order appears to affect everything from development assistance to military aid – including potentially to Ukraine, which received billions of dollars in weapons under Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden as it tries to repel a Russian invasion.

Canada should end Trudeau’s vanity values spending as well.

Ukraine is OK.

LEDREW: Justin Trudeau apologizes for everyone’s mistakes but his own

Canadians are now treated almost daily to analyses of how the Trudeau government has damaged Canada with its crazy inflationary spending, with its missed opportunities for wealth with the oil and gas industries, with its hollowing out of Defence, leaving our NATO allies high and dry, its net-zero poppycock, its silly and demeaning dress-up world tours, and its numerous scandals of international proportions.
