Ottawa is tight-lipped about King Charles’s coronation — and monarchists are worried

Monarchists in Canada say they’re troubled by the fact that the federal government hasn’t said yet how the country will celebrate King Charles’s coronation — a historic event for the head of state that is just two months away.

Royal-watchers say that as a senior member of the Commonwealth of Nations with close historic ties to the Crown, Canada should meaningfully mark Charles’s investiture as King and the crowning of Camilla as Queen Consort.

I am not sure the Monarchy will survive William and Kate.

As for Canada, I think a respect for  tradition exists but a growing indifference may spell the end of our ties.

EU’s death sentence for cars hits a German roadblock

BRUSSELS — What was supposed to be an uncontroversial final approval of the EU’s plan to end the sale of new combustion engine cars and vans by 2035 is turning into a nail-biter that could upend the bloc’s effort to slash greenhouse gas emissions from transport.

German Transport Minister Volker Wissing threw out the EU etiquette book and warned Berlin would withhold its support for the final approval of the deal — something that is exceedingly rare once legislation has been negotiated with Parliament and backed by both MEPs and the Council.

‘It Hasn’t Stopped’: The Northern Border Is Wide Open And People Are Funneling Across

CHAMPLAIN, New York — Migrants are crossing the northern border both into the U.S. and into Canada illegally, causing chaos on both the Canadian and American sides, with the latter side reeling from the costs.

Border Patrol encountered a nearly 900% surge of migrants into the U.S. in the Swanton sector—which spans parts of New York and Vermont—in January, when agents recorded 367 apprehensions. Migrants are also crossing illegally into Canada in droves along Roxham Road in Champlain, New York, where taxis with “frontera,” or “border” written in Spanish, on them, bring people back and forth for hours every day.

Chinese subterfuge poses direct threat to Canada, and Trudeau is A-OK with that

“I would put the threat level at about eight out of 10. That’s mainly because the Chinese authorities are absolutely determined to achieve their goals, no matter what people think. I’m particularly concerned about their willingness to use almost any method to succeed.”

It was May 3, 2021, at a meeting of the House of Commons special committee on Canada-China relations, and Richard Fadden, former director of CSIS, had been asked by Conservative MP Pierre Paul-Hus how he would rate the threat posed by China to Canada’s economy, national security and defence.

German patriotism collides with All Quiet on the Western Front

As the bewilderingly overpraised Everything Everywhere At Once continues its inevitable march to Best Picture at the Oscars, many of the films that were once tipped to defeat it have slipped away. The Banshees of Inisherin, Top Gun: Maverick, Tár — all have settled into their time-honored place of being forever the Academy’s bridesmaid and not the triumphant bride.

Yet almost out of nowhere, Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front has emerged as a serious contender. It swept the BAFTA awards in February, and with nine Oscar nominations, including Best Film, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Adapted Screenplay, it looks certain to win at least a couple of them. Not bad for a two-and-half-hour adaptation of a 1929 German novel.

A friend and I had a discussion about the “missing something” from this remake.

Certainly they strayed too far from the book, but what struck me was how little empathy I had for Paul or any of the characters.

The original was sentimental, syrupy even but how else was Hollywood to stir sympathy for characters that were your mortal enemy only 12 years before?

Who didn’t love original Kat? In the latest version the friendship just seemed shallow and forced.

Nice to look at but it left an empty feeling at the end.

Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan Grow Harsher

Pakistan’s blasphemy laws have once again been made even more stringent by the country’s lawmakers. Amid a long-running international outcry against the notorious blasphemy laws, the National Assembly of Pakistan on January 17 unanimously passed “The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Act 2023,” which increased the minimum punishment for those found guilty of insulting the Islamic Prophet Mohammad’s companions, wives and family members from three years to 10 years’ imprisonment, along with a fine of 1 million Pakistani rupees ($4,122).
