Over 35 years as a drug user, Vancouver resident Garth Mullins said he’s had “hundreds and hundreds” of interactions with police, and long believed drug decriminalization was smart policy.
“I was first arrested for drug possession when I was 19, and it changes your life,” said Mullins, who is now in his 50s and was an early backer of Canadian province British Columbia’s decriminalization program that ended on Saturday.
“That time served inside can add up for a lot of people. They do a lifetime jolt in a series of three‑month bits,” he told AFP.

I’m a conservative who believed in Doug Ford. His credibility is collapsing
When Premier Doug Ford first swept into office, he promised to clean up the mess. Ontario had endured years of Liberal scandals: gas plants, eHealth, hydro costs, etc. Reminders of how insider politics corrodes public trust.
Ford did not run as an ideologue. His pitch was simpler. He would look out for the little guy, spend tax dollars wisely, and restore trust, accountability and common sense at Queen’s Park.
Ford revealed his true colours very early on and bear in mind the author is a Toronto Star conservative who takes seeming offense at labeling ChiCom EV’s “spy cars” which in fact they are.
We were warned he was nothing like his legendary brother Rob and that was said by “conservatives” hoping to ease the anxiety of fence sitters.
He’s a Liberal doing what Liberals do identity politics, crony capitalism, while maintaining a strong aversion to anything perceived to be “Right Wing”.
I do have some sympathy for Ford, right now Ontario is caught in a vise between Trump and the Laurentian elite and a great deal of unavoidable pain lies ahead for all of us.

How ICE Already Knows Who Minneapolis Protesters
On the morning of Jan. 10, Nicole Cleland was in her car trailing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent through Richfield, Minn., her hometown.
Suddenly, the agent turned into a series of one-way streets and stopped, getting out of his white Dodge Ram, said Ms. Cleland, who volunteers with a local watchdog group that observes the activity of immigration officers. The agent then walked over to Ms. Cleland’s car and surprised her by addressing her as Nicole.
“He said he had facial recognition and that his body camera was on,” said Ms. Cleland, 56, who had not met the agent before.
