Canada’s recession will hit earlier, harder and last longer than expected. The Star talked to economists to find out who is most at risk

Alan Liu is in the fight of his life.

The pandemic thrust two brutal years on his once-thriving downtown Thai restaurants. Now, hope for a successful recovery is fading, and like so many small business owners in Toronto, Liu sees nothing but more turmoil ahead.

“We’re still in the throes of an economic comeback from COVID,” Liu said. “But we keep getting hit repeatedly. It’s just one thing after another.”

It’s the Star so Blackie holds no blame.

Vladimir Putin: Crimea bridge explosion was ‘terrorist act’ by Ukraine’s secret service

Vladimir Putin on Sunday called the attack on the Crimea bridge a “terrorist act” carried out by the Ukrainian secret service, paving the way for an escalation in the Kremlin’s response.

Putin made his first comments about Saturday’s explosion in an unscheduled 33-second video address late on Sunday night.

“There is no doubt. This is an act of terrorism aimed at destroying critically important civilian infrastructure,” the Russian president said in the broadcast, published on the Kremlin’s Telegram channel. “This was devised, carried out and ordered by the Ukrainian special services.”

Canadian court weighs whether U.S. is “safe” for migrants

The Canadian Supreme Court is hearing an unusual case this month. A group of immigration activists are asking the court to rule that the United States can not be considered a “safe third country” for the purposes of the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) enacted between the two countries nearly two decades ago. In essence, the plaintiffs are asking the court to strike down the STCA.

Secret Recording Shows Racial Truths Behind LA Woke Politics “I see a lot of little short dark people.”

Oh to be a fly on that wall.

Earlier this month, an anonymous Reddit account posted several shocking audio recordings. The recordings seem to contain the voices of Council President Nury Martinez, Councilmembers Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, and LA Labor Federation President Ron Herrera discussing a wide range of topics of great public interest and being incredibly racist while doing so.

Harvey Weinstein goes on trial in LA, where he once reigned

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Five years after women’s stories about him made the #MeToo movement explode, Harvey Weinstein is going on trial in the city where he once was a colossus at the Oscars.

Already serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault in New York, the 70-year-old former movie mogul faces different allegations including several that prosecutors say occurred during a pivotal Oscar week in Los Angeles. Jury selection for an eight-week trial begins Monday.

Weinstein has been indicted on four counts of rape and seven other sexual assault counts involving five women, who will appear in court as Jane Does to tell their stories. He has pleaded not guilty.

Protests grip Iran as rights group says 19 children killed

DUBAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – Protests ignited by the death of a young woman in police custody continued across Iran on Sunday in defiance of a crackdown by the authorities, as a human rights group said at least 185 people, including children, had been killed in demonstrations.

Anti-government protests that began on Sept. 17 at the funeral of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in her Kurdish town of Saqez, have turned into the biggest challenge to Iran’s clerical leaders in years, with protesters calling for the downfall of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Activist complains SC Dobbs ruling means ‘now I have to be more careful when I have sex’

It’s a fascinating thing, watching the lightbulbs flicker over the heads of liberal ladies in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs ruling, which overturned the unconstitutional Roe v. Wade decision.

As pro-abortion activists continue to illegally protest with impunity outside the homes of conservative justices, the mental gymnastics they execute while trying to defend their outrage over a ruling that it seems they are incapable of fully understanding (Dobbs didn’t ban abortion, it simply returned the power to legislate the matter to the states, where it belongs) often leads to a sticky landing.

Maine University Students Demand Prof Be Fired for Contradicting Their Fantasy That There are Multiple Genders

“A time is coming,” said St. Anthony the Great way back in the fourth century, “when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him, saying, ‘You are mad; you are not like us.’” And here we are. Fox News reported Friday that “students at the University of Southern Maine (USM) are demanding that their professor be replaced for saying that only two sexes exist.”

Russia realists are the new lockdown sceptics

Moral absolutism plagues our response to Ukraine

Less than a year after 9/11, Dick Cheney had a message for Americans: the “old doctrines of security do not apply… Containment is not possible when dictators obtain weapons of mass destruction.”

Cheney was referring to Saddam Hussein, but it is not difficult to imagine the current President saying something similar about his Russian counterpart. Just last week, Joe Biden stated that Vladimir Putin was “not joking” about the use of nuclear weapons, warning that “we have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis”. Cheney’s hawkish worldview has been reinvigorated by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. This time, however, those advocating restraint — the “realists” — are no longer just opponents, they are now enemies too.

The tech tyrants are out of control

PayPal’s fantasy about fining speechcriminals is a terrifying sign of the times.

Our corporate overlords are out of control. Just look at PayPal. It appears to have flirted with the idea of fining people for saying problematic things, for dealing in wrongthink. A briefly published new policy said users might have a whopping $2,500 seized from their coffers if PayPal believed they were engaged in ‘misinformation’ or ‘hate speech’. Just think about what an egregious affront this would have been not only to freedom of speech but also to the fundamentals of justice. Without a trial, presumably even without the right of representation, an individual or organisation could have been subjected to severe financial punishment on the say so of some hip moderator in California who didn’t like something they said. Tech tyranny is getting serious now.

Troubled US teenagers ‘snatched’ at their parents’ request

Thousands of American teenagers end up in correctional institutions aimed at dealing with behavioural problems and drug abuse

David Patterson was shaken from his sleep one night by two strange men who entered his bedroom and forced the 14-year-old out of bed.

It was shortly after 4am and the two men before him were holding up a pair of handcuffs.

“They said, ‘we could do this the easy way or the hard way’,” he later recalled.

He was soon bungled out of the Patterson family’s California home and into a taxi on the way to the airport. He was being “gooned” – forcibly transported to a place aimed at correcting naughty children’s behaviour.

First the Pandemic, Then the Purge

A Coast Guard technician is about to lose his job because he won’t get the jab.

The pandemic is over, but the purge continues,” Stephen Crampton, senior counsel for the conservative Thomas More Society, told me.

We were talking about Zach Loesch, a Coast Guard aviation survival technician — a real hero about to lose his job because he won’t betray his deeply held beliefs.

As Hurricane Ian walloped Florida, Loesch kicked through a house wall in order to rescue a disabled woman and her husband. Then he went back to get her wheelchair. He also rescued a bunch of cats and dogs.

Proud Boys founder scrambling to salvage ‘bitterly divided’ group after new revelations: report

According to a report from the Daily Beast, the founder of the Proud Boys, who has been keeping his distance from the right-wing group, headed to Las Vegas weeks ago for a meet-up of members and attempted to put down a civil war in the organization that is reportedly coming apart at the seams after revelations that one key leader was an FBI informant.

With Gavin McInnes later describing it as the “weirdest experience of my life,” the report by Will Sommer states the group is still “bitterly divided” into two camps (the “Nationals” and “Standard”) with McInnes himself noting on his radio show: “Both sides say that the other side is racist and tolerates pedophiles.”

According to the report, the Proud Boys are reeling after criminal indictments and finger-pointing in what McInnes labeled a “massive civil war” between members.

Wood from B.C. forests is being burned for electricity billed as green — but critics say that’s deceptive

From the highway just south of Prince George, B.C., you can see the logs, thousands of them, piled neatly in rows.

They were cut from trees in old growth and primary forests in the province’s Interior.

This timber won’t be used to build homes or furniture, or even to make paper. These logs will be ground and compressed into tiny pellets, shipped to Europe and Asia and burned to produce fuel for electricity.

That’s why we call it a green-scam.
