Why Torontonians are facing a ‘staggering’ spike in auto thefts — and what police are doing about it

Patricia Li’s year began with the theft of a Lexus NX 300 from her Toronto home — but that was just the beginning of her troubles.

Five months later, thieves returned in the middle of the night for her other vehicle, a Lexus RX 450, but this time they weren’t as lucky.

After the first theft in February, Li installed a video camera that captured footage of three people attempting to break into the car.

I wonder if the Ferguson effect plays a role?

Ottawa Police Constable Kristina Neilson to take Plea Deal for $50 Convoy Donation – A hollow victory for the prosecution

(Ottawa) Informed observers of the recent September 29, 2022 online video-hearing for Ottawa Police Constable Kristina Neilson were astonished to see that the officer appeared without a lawyer.

Neilson’s representative, police union Sergeant Patrick Laflamme, asked the Trials Officer to set a date for a 2-hour joint defense-prosecution submission on the facts of the case and an appropriate sentence. Constable Neilson will plead guilty to the charge of discreditable conduct for donating $50 to a Christian website to purchase food and gas for the ‘Freedom Convoy’.

Halloween could be haunted by supply chain issues amid trick or treating rebound

The Halloween mood on Baruch Labunski’s Toronto street has been eerie the last two years – and not in a witches-and-goblins way.

“Throughout the pandemic nobody really put up decorations and there were hardly any kids,” he said.

The Candy Kiss is self replicating. No shortage is possible.

I am curious to see if Halloween rebounds over the next few years. I suspect the pandemic has killed movie going so why not Halloween?

Legal battle between Torstar owners heads to court Monday

A legal battle between the owners of media properties including the Toronto Star is heading to court.

A hearing is scheduled for Monday morning in Ontario Superior Court over a dispute between Paul Rivett and Jordan Bitove, who purchased Torstar Corp. in 2020 for $60-million. Nordstar Capital Inc., in which Mr. Rivett and Mr. Bitove are equal partners, and which controls all of Torstar’s assets, is in breach of a credit facility, according to court documents. The two partners are at odds over how to address the debt.

Interesting fight ahead. The Star’s finances are not healthy.

Facing foreign conflicts, domestic disasters, Canada’s top soldier worries about readiness

Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre says he’s worried about the Canadian Armed Forces’ readiness as it faces pressure both from the conflict in Ukraine and the need to respond to natural disasters at home.

In an interview on Rosemary Barton Live on Sunday, Eyre said the two issues represented “strong demands on both sides” and, given issues with equipment and personnel shortages, he was “concerned about our overall readiness.”

How Victims of Rape Are Viewed: The Persecution of Christians, August 2022

Pakistan: After refusing to review evidence from a Christian couple trying to recover their 12-year-old daughter from a married Muslim man accused of kidnapping her and forcing her to convert to Islam and marry him, Muslim judge Sadaqat Ali Khan threw the case out of court on Aug. 18.

When the parents first reported the kidnapping, her kidnapper, Imran Shahzad and his wife Adiba, were brought in for questioning. However, when the 12-year-old girl was produced at court and said that she had converted of her free will and married her Muslim kidnapper, the judge—ignoring the girl’s young age and distraught demeanor—ordered the accused released and the girl returned to him, even though there was massive contrary evidence to indicate that the girl was being coerced to lie under duress.

The crash course turning Ukrainians into soldiers — in the UK

Aman lies groaning on the path with a red stump where his leg was. Ukrainian recruits run through smoke to kneel behind sandbags and fire at the enemy on a sun-baked hillside.

It looks like a scene from the war in eastern Ukraine, but this is southern England and the casualty an amputee actor, engaged by the British Army to help train Ukrainian civilians in rudimentary soldiering skills to defend their homeland from Russia.

The faces of these raw recruits betray their anxiety as bursts of live machinegun fire crackle overhead — the idea is to “inoculate” them, to familiarise them with the sound so they won’t panic in combat.

Jordan Peterson Speaks of God

The existence of God requires us to temper every assertion of power with a sense of responsibility to the truth.

In his past few podcasts, Jordan Peterson has picked up with greater vigor a theme that has been increasingly among his favorites: the inescapable role of God in life and meaning.

This would not be so noteworthy were Peterson a cleric of some sort. Preachers of every stripe and style regularly speak to their congregants or students, and it usually doesn’t interest anyone beyond a parochial group.

Luongo: The Curious Whodunit Of Nordstreams 1 & 2

The old world broke this week. It was blown up cynically by someone who thought this would advance their agenda the most.

The act of vandalizing a major piece of physical infrastructure, targeting civilian populations, isn’t unprecedented in history, but it does signal that everything we thought we knew about the rules of the current game was wrong.

Well, for most people anyway.

When I spoke in June at the Ron Paul Institute Conference on Foreign Policy I described the game of geopolitics as a seven-player game of the ancient Chinese game, Go.

Serious Rabbit Hole reading. But I admit that blowing up the pipelines leaves us more questions than answers. Do you trust the Biden government? The EU? The WEF? Russia?

As Women in Iran Are Shot Down While Fighting for Their Rights, the Squad Has Little to Say

What’s happening in Iran is the biggest women’s rights protest ever in the Islamic world. Yet the response from some of the leading feminists in the United States, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib, has been strikingly muted. Each one has made what can be characterized at best as a tepid, pro forma response, one that contrasts sharply with their statements and actions during the Trump administration. It looks as if each one of these women regards Donald Trump as a far greater threat to women than the Islamic Republic of Iran is.
