Carney and Poilievre find themselves on two very different hot seats as Parliament gears up to return

OTTAWA — Canada’s two main political party leaders won’t boast about the connection, but they have at least one important thing in common these days: As a new session of Parliament opens Monday, they’re both sitting on hot seats.

Facing upcoming periods that may well determine their political fates, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre are both approaching hurdles they need to get over in the coming weeks and months to ensure their grips on power.

Disgraceful past of Minneapolis mother who raised $173,000 by claiming her baby was tear-gassed by ICE while driving home from basketball game… as new video paints a VERY different picture

Lying tear gassed baby momma Destiny Jackson

Her make-up free, shellshocked face was beamed into tens of millions of homes across America this week as Destiny Jackson recounted a horrifying encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The 26-year-old mother-of-six told CNN that her baby son was tear-gassed after she and her husband Shawn found themselves trapped in an anti-ICE protest in Minneapolis while driving home from their older son’s basketball game.

An altered version of events was offered to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Associated Press, with Jackson claiming her family was injured after she stopped to check on her mother, who had been attending the January 14 protest.

SLOBODIAN: Watching the homeless from a five-star hotel — Ottawa’s housing advocate embarrasses Canada abroad

It’s sure a good thing her staff avoided booking rooms in “opulent” hotels when Canada’s self-described “watchdog for the homeless” jetted off on an extended junket to Egypt.

Marie-Josée Houle, a former punk rock musician who is now Cabinet’s $213,000-a-year Housing Advocate, and whoever accompanied her settled for rooms at the Marriott and Triumph hotels in Cairo.

The rise of toxic femininity

At the end of last year, the government announced a programme designed to tackle the radicalisation of young men in schools. Teachers will be trained in how to spot misogyny in the classroom and children deemed to be at fault sent on ‘toxic masculinity’ courses – an attempt to ‘re-educate’ white working-class boys that’s guaranteed to spawn 1,000 memes. It was billed as a key component of the government’s strategy to halve violence against women and girls by 2035. Don’t worry about the grooming gangs – the real predators are the knuckle-dragging teenagers, as per Adolescence, which was festooned with Golden Globes by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association last week.

Bell: Carney puts on Captain Canada costume — we get words, more words

Two worlds apart.

Hundreds in the Alberta town of Stony Plain line up in -30 C wind chill weather to sign a petition so Albertans this fall can vote on a very important question.

Do you agree the province of Alberta should cease to be part of Canada to become an independent state?

At about the same time, in faraway Quebec City, Prime Minister Mark Carney addresses the nation. He wants to speak of national unity. He wants to score support.

Guess Who Booed Howard Lutnick at the World Economic Forum—and Why Lutnick Called It the ‘Greatest Honor’

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick revealed on Fox News’ Jesse Watters Primetime Thursday who the sole booer of his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos was, and why he considered it the “greatest honor.”

Lutnick described the panel he was on at the Summit as “basically a very left set of talks where someone said we need a new form of capitalism, which I think is another way to say communism. And then they let me speak at the end. Then I gave a three-minute talk. And I just talked about my op-ed.”

Bessent pans Carney, cheers on Albertan separatism amid growing US-Canada rift

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent needled Canada over the prospect of an independence referendum in Alberta this week, as President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are locked in a clash over Ottawa’s role in the hemisphere.

“Alberta is a natural partner for the U.S.,” he told conservative podcaster Jack Posobiec in an interview Thursday. “They have great resources. The Albertans are very independent people. Rumor that they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not.”

The Fred Phelps Left Invades the Churches

A Pew poll released about a year ago noted that just 37 percent of American liberals identify as Christians, versus 82 percent of conservatives and 61 percent of independents.

In 2007, 62 percent of liberals identified as Christian, so the drop, particularly vis-à-vis drops in Christian identification for conservatives and independents, looks Cyclone steep.

Ontario homelessness rates surge amid stagnant income assistance rates: report

More than 30,000 people using Ontario income assistance programs are finding themselves homeless anyway – a number that has dramatically increased since before the pandemic, according to a new report from a Toronto-based human rights organization.

And those surging homelessness rates are linked to stagnant income assistance as even the cheapest apartments tend to cost more than the entire monthly cheques from one major program, researchers from Maytree found.

‘If the Bad Guys Start Shooting, It Comes Over Greenland’ vs. Europe’s Strategic Myopia

Pituffik Space Base

For decades, the world treated Greenland as a sentimental footnote in Arctic mythology rather than a linchpin in global security and modern technology. This was strategic negligence with real consequences.

By contrast, President Donald J. Trump saw what Europe could not, or perhaps would not: that Greenland is not a quaint curiosity; in the 21st century, it is an essential security asset and industrial necessity for the West. “Everything comes over Greenland. If the bad guys start shooting, it comes over Greenland,” he said.

From the Arctic flight path of Russian and Chinese intercontinental ballistic missiles to the Arctic shipping lanes increasingly packed with Russian warships, Greenland’s importance has surged.

Accused of murdering of her would-be son, Becky Hamber admits telling boy he ‘subtracts value from everyone’s lives’

Becky Hamber, Brandy Cooney Killer Moms

Last week, Becky Hamber told her murder trial that text messages were the only times she and her wife spoke about the two brothers they were seeking to adopt in such offensive terms as “idiot,” “dumbass,” and “it” — but that she never spoke that way to the boys’ faces.

On Thursday, she conceded that this wasn’t always the case.
