Pro-government marchers call for executions, as protests continue in Iran

TEHRAN: Thousands demonstrated across Iran on Friday at government-backed pro-hijab counter rallies, after a week of bloody protests over the death of a woman arrested for wearing the Islamic headscarf “improperly.”

At least 50 people have been killed by security forces in the anti-government protests, Iran Human Rights, an Oslo-based organization, said on Friday — more than three times the official death toll of 17, which includes five security personnel.

The Liberals should be worried if Trudeau stays

For aficionados of Canadian politics, an admittedly declining species, the House of Commons matchup of Justin Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre is the main event of the fall season.

For the first time as Prime Minister, Mr. Trudeau faces a Leader of the Official Opposition who possesses communication skills that rival his own. Mr. Trudeau benefited from comparisons with previous Conservative Party leaders Andrew Scheer and Erin O’Toole, neither of whom could hold an audience. In Mr. Poilievre, he faces an opponent who can draw a crowd.

Trans: a fetishised view of womanhood

What that Canadian teacher with giant breasts reveals about trans identity.

There are some occasions when it is perfectly acceptable for men to don dodgy wigs and strap on comically large plastic boobs – think stag dos and drag nights. But it is generally agreed that such antics ought to be kept out of schools and away from children. As such, when the first photos and videos surfaced of a Canadian school teacher wearing a gargantuan set of fake breasts with protruding nipples, most people assumed it must have been a hoax. It was not.

Can a jet-setting Trudeau divert Canadians from problems at home?

Fresh from his diplomatic duties and singalong at the Queen’s funeral in London, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau headed off to a new gig in New York Tuesday to hobnob anew with world leaders at the United Nations.

It was an action-packed visit. According to an official release, the prime minister “worked closely with our global partners to address the world’s biggest challenges and make life better for people.”

A New Counterculture?

If the Right captures some of the Left’s youthful energy and rebellious cachet, it would represent a tectonic cultural and political shift.

In July, the New York Times posted a job announcement seeking a reporter-cum-anthropologist to cover an important new beat: infiltrating the “online communities and influential personalities making up the right-wing media ecosystem” and “shedding light on their motivations” for the benefit of Times readers. Establishing this “critical listening post” would not be a role for the faint of heart. The daring candidate would have to be specifically “prepared to inhabit corners of the internet” where “far-right” ideas were discussed, all for the higher goal of determining “where and why these ideas take shape.”

A Hate Crime a Day Keeps the DOJ Away

If any other ethnic group in America* was being violently attacked on the streets of a major city with such numbing repetitiveness, a major civil rights investigation would follow (*except for Asians)

New York politicians are at least talking about waging a more serious response to the frequent acts of violence and harassment targeting the city’s Orthodox Jews. Last week, Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres, N.Y.-15, called for a federal probe of New York’s failure to prosecute suspects in anti-Jewish hate crimes, which have become so routine a feature of life in Orthodox communities that only the most egregious incidents ever become known beyond community media or the Twitter feeds of local politicians. On Monday, Mayor Eric Adams promised that assaults on Jews “won’t be tolerated.”

Continental Breakfast (Open Thread)

Apparently we in the Maritimes are going to have a very horrible storm in the next few hours, so if you never hear from me again assume the power went out and then I was swept out to sea, slightly annoyed that I never got around to watching the last half-season of Better Call Saul. Avenge me. Use your imagination.

In the meantime here is a cinnamon apple rings recipe via Osumashi.

… At least 154 Chinese scientists who worked on government-sponsored research at the U.S.’s foremost national security laboratory over the last two decades have been recruited to do scientific work in China — some of which helped advance military technology that threatens American national security — according to a new private intelligence report obtained by NBC News.

Undercover with Russia’s fake arms dealers

Russian state TV claims Ukrainians are selling US-donated weapons on the dark web. The BBC investigated one such marketplace, spoke undercover to those apparently selling weapons, and gathered evidence that suggests the adverts for weapons are fake.

“Ukrops [a derogatory Russian slang term used to refer to Ukrainians] are selling Javelins on the darknet. The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine resells equipment and weapons supplied by Nato.” This message about anti-tank weapons was posted on Twitter and Telegram on 2 June by pro-Kremlin English-language account ASB Military News.

The account has been recently suspended by Twitter but still exists on Telegram, where it has more than 100,000 subscribers.
