If Iran’s Regime Stays in Place, Trump’s Gaza ‘Peace’ Plan Will Not See Success

US President Donald J. Trump’s plan for ending the Israel-Hamas war should have included a provision to stipulate the need for a different regime in Iran. That is the fastest, best and, unfortunately, the only way to eradicate Hamas and destroy “all military, terror, and offensive infrastructure, including tunnels and weapon production facilities” not only in the Gaza Strip, as stated in Trump’s 20-point plan, but also the Middle East.

But … Rapid escalation, caught off guard: Part of why Netanyahu asked Trump to slow down on Iran

Facial recognition pilot cuts crime, says Met

A trial of Live Facial Recognition technology (LFR) in south London has helped cut robbery and shoplifting and led to more than 100 arrests, according to the Metropolitan Police.

The pilot scheme in Croydon, which launched last October, has seen fixed cameras mounted on street furniture instead of mobile vans, which map a person’s unique facial features and matches them against faces on watch lists.

The Met said a third of the arrests involved offences against women and girls, including strangulation and sexual assault.

Warming centre ‘war zone’ in shadow of Toronto City Hall

This is one homelessness hot spot that Toronto City Hall can’t ignore.

Neighbours have complained to the Toronto Sun about open drug use and violence at a small two-storey building at 81 Elizabeth St. That building has the distinction of being in the literal shadow of city hall, with stairs to Nathan Phillips Square’s elevated walkways across the road from its doors.

Toronto a mental case says new report

‘This is unprecedented’: New report card shows Toronto’s mental health is collapsing

Toronto’s mental health has deteriorated so rapidly over the past decade that the number of residents who say they are doing well has collapsed from nearly three quarters to barely half, a situation that at least one expert says is “unprecedented” and “crazy.”

A report, released by ThriveTO in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, CAMH, the City of Toronto and other organizations, found the percentage of Torontonians who describe their mental health as “very good” or “excellent” fell from 73 per cent in 2015 to 52 per cent in 2022.

What does Donald Trump actually want from Canada?

What does U.S. President Donald Trump actually want from Canada?

While Trump says the U.S. doesn’t need Canadian products, he has also repeatedly expressed a desire to turn Canada into a “cherished” state. Before leaving office, former prime minister Justin Trudeau suggested the Trump administration was really after Canada’s natural wealth. Trump and U.S. officials are also pressuring Ottawa on a range of issues like dairy supply management, border security, drug trafficking and defence spending.

Trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada have, meanwhile, ground to a halt. When asked earlier this week about renewing the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Trade Agreement (CUSMA) he championed during his first term, Trump said it was “irrelevant to me.”

‘Europe won’t be blackmailed,’ Danish PM says in wake of Trump Greenland threats

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says “Europe won’t be blackmailed”, as she and other European leaders continue to weigh their response to US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats over Greenland.

Trump says he will impose new taxes on eight US allies – Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK – in February if they oppose his proposed takeover of the autonomous Danish territory.

He insists Greenland is critical for US security and has not ruled out taking it by force – a move that has drawn widespread criticism.

I wonder if the Elephant in the room has ever been denied a lift by an Uber driver?

Uber called out by service dog users who are fed up with ride rejections

Salome Solomon, who is legally blind, relies on two things to get around Ottawa: her guide dog, Zurich, and Uber.

But she says Canada’s dominant rideshare service keeps letting her down by failing to uphold her legal right to ride with a service animal.

There’s a video at the link and it’s obvious the Uber driver is a foreigner from an incompatible culture. Most likely a Muslim, a cult with a filthy aversion to man’s best friend.

The CBC being Islamist apologists won’t mention the painfully obvious of course.

Western alliance hangs in balance as Europe stiffens itself against Trump’s threats

Greenland, with a population of fewer than 57,000, might not seem to be the territory on which the future of the relationship between Europe and the US, the viability of Nato as the world’s most successful defence alliance, or even the fractured relations between the UK and Europe would be determined.

But battlefields are sometimes the product of chance, rather than choice. It now feels as if Donald Trump’s threat to impose 10% tariffs on eight fellow Nato states for sending troops last week to support Greenland’s sovereignty may be one of those clarifying moments in which Europe had no option. Successive European leaders condemned Trump’s blackmail and intimidation on Sunday and they sounded as if they meant it.

US Lawmakers Warn Canada Against Allowing ‘Beijing a Foothold in the North American Auto Market’

The U.S. House Select Committee on China is warning Canada that it should reconsider opening its auto industry to Beijing and risking thousands of jobs, ahead of the upcoming renewal negotiations for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

By opening its market to Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), Canada risks distorting its auto industry by giving “Beijing a foothold in the North American auto market, threatening thousands of jobs and undermining a century of integrated automotive leadership,” the committee said in a Jan. 16 post on X.

“China’s state-subsidized overcapacity has already distorted Europe’s auto industry, and North America will be next if this precedent stands,” the committee said.
