Toronto’s hotel shelter policy is wreaking havoc on residents

It happened in Manhattan under former leftist mayor Bill DiBiaso and continues to occur in Toronto under the current mayor John Tory.

I’m referring to a short-sighted and disastrous policy of putting homeless with addictions and mental issues in tiny hotels left empty during Covid.

In Toronto, the hotel shelter policy was only supposed to be a stopgap measure to provide accommodation to the homeless occupying downtown parks.

But many leases with hoteliers – happy to make a quick and steady buck – have been extended two and three times.

One of the most disastrous has been the Novotel hotel, owned by the Vancouver-based Silver Hotel Group, a shelter which opened in February 2021 under secretive circumstances and which has wreaked havoc on the Esplanade neighbourhood.

This teacher’s arrest is a microcosm of the left’s obsession with child sexuality

A male teacher in Hawaii was arrested for engaging in perverse sexual behavior with a 13-year-old male student, which he recorded, and for trading child pornography with a teacher on the mainland. That’s disgusting enough. What takes the story to a whole other level is the frantic tweets the teacher published haranguing conservatives for having dirty minds and projecting their sins onto innocent educators who merely want to make sure young people truly understand sex. It is a microcosm of the left’s predatory obsession with child sexuality.

Privileged millennials seem to think they can tell us what it is to be working class.

Last year, Grace Blakeley, a privately educated leftist and journalist, declared on Twitter that class has nothing to do with your accent, where you live, where you grew up, what your parents do and where you went to school. ‘These things remain important in supporting certain individuals to change their class position’, she tweeted, ‘but they don’t come into the definition of class’.

I wasn’t surprised or even angry. I have been watching this narrative about class in Britain unfold over several years from the bourgeois left – those bright young things who have lived comfy, cushioned, middle-class lives, complete with private educations and Oxbridge degrees, and who now have very nice seats at the table with the chattering classes, the politicians, the academics in Russell Group research universities and the creative industries in elite spaces in London. No doubt, they read The Communist Manifesto at university and are now ‘literally communists’, taking up as much political space as their ever widening middle-class elbows can stretch to.

Think of an even more earnest Bob Rae and the NDP.

Crowded with hundreds of others held captive by Russian soldiers for four weeks in an airless, unsanitary school basement in Yahidne, a village in the Chernihiv region of northern Ukraine, the ill and the frail were particularly vulnerable.

Several could not withstand the lack of medicine, food, fresh air, and overall comfort in the dark, stuffy rooms they shared with more than 300 other captives of the invading forces, survivors said.

Four of the five most expensive cities on either side of the border when it comes to cost of living versus income are located in Canada, a new study shows.

Data released by Canadian insurance provider PolicyAdvisor suggests that New York City, Mississauga, Ont., Vancouver, Hamilton, Ont., and Toronto are the most unaffordable places to live in either country.

The study examined the 10 most populous cities in each country and compared the average cost of eight common necessities, items and services: a cinema ticket, a restaurant meal, a bottle of water, a cappuccino, a one-month gym membership, a one-way ticket on transit, a monthly pass on transit, and one month’s rent.

What we can learn from 1935′s On-to-Ottawa Trek, a convoy of the disillusioned

Earlier this year, a trucker convoy descended on Canada’s capital to complain about federal policies and what it saw as government inaction. But going to Ottawa to protest was a Canadian tradition long before that.

In December, 1910, for example, 500 Prairie farmer delegates marched up Parliament Hill and into the House of Commons, where they took over proceedings. The next year, a small delegation representing Saskatchewan Treaty 4 bands brought their grievances directly to senior Indian Affairs officials. But perhaps the most popular protest to take to the capital and capture the Canadian imagination was the On-to-Ottawa Trek, in 1935 – even though the intended cross-country demonstration never actually made it beyond Regina.

My Dad rode the rails during the depression, nearly froze to death. Later he would land in Normandy on D-Day. Wounds would keep him hospitalized for nearly 2 years.

Trudeau’s callous vanity seems hell bent on seeing history repeat itself.
