LONDON (AP) — A man who stabbed a veteran British lawmaker to death last year while he was meeting with voters was a “committed Islamist terrorist” who had spent years researching and planning potential attacks on lawmakers, a prosecutor said Monday.
Ali Harbi Ali, 26, appeared in the dock Monday at London’s Central Criminal Court as a trial opened into the murder of Conservative lawmaker David Amess, who was attacked on Oct. 16 during a routine meeting with constituents in a church hall in the town of Leigh-on-Sea in eastern England.
Ali, a London man with Somali heritage, denies charges of murder and preparing acts of terrorism.
EU ministers meet to discuss further Russian sanctions as cracks emerge
Lithuania is urging the European Union to ban Russian oil as cracks begin to show in how far the EU will go in imposing further sanctions on the Kremlin’s war machine.
As Ukraine defied a Russian ultimatum to surrender the port city of Mariupol, EU foreign ministers gathered in Brussels to discuss further sanctions against Russia at the start of an intense week of diplomacy.
But after four rounds of sweeping EU sanctions in three weeks, tensions are emerging. The Baltic states and Poland are calling for tougher measures, including an oil embargo, while Germany fears a short-term energy ban would cause joblessness and fuel shortages.
“The Biden administration has flirted with lifting oil sanctions on once-shunned Venezuela to temper surging oil prices, yet it appears unwilling to encourage investment in domestic energy production,” Fox News reported.
Meanwhile, Biden’s advisers “are discussing a possible visit to Saudi Arabia this spring to help repair relations and convince the Kingdom to pump more oil,” Axios reported.

OTTAWA — Ontarians could soon find their driver’s licences and vehicle registration revoked for participating in illegal blockades.

BERLIN (AP) — German prosecutors said Monday they now believe that the suspect in a knife attack on a train in November that left four people wounded had an Islamic extremist motive.
The attack took place on an ICE high-speed train traveling from Passau, on the Austrian border, to Hamburg on Nov. 6. Authorities said that the man attacked his victims apparently at random and showed signs of mental illness, but initially said there was no immediate indication of a terror motive.
Munich prosecutors said a few weeks later that they were no longer ruling out an Islamic extremist motive.
LVIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian officials defiantly rejected a Russian demand that their forces in Mariupol lay down their arms and raise white flags Monday in exchange for safe passage out of the besieged port city.
As Russia intensified its effort to pound Mariupol into submission, its ground offensive in other parts of Ukraine has become bogged down. Western officials and analysts say the conflict is turning into a grinding war of attrition, with Russia bombarding cities.

COVID-related hospitalizations drop below 600 in Ontario; 4 more deaths added to cumulative total
The number of patients with COVID-19 at Ontario hospitals hit the lowest level seen in nearly three months, dropping below 600 today.
Provincial health officials say there are currently 551 COVID-19 patients currently receiving treatment in hospitals, down from 602 last week. COVID-related hospitalizations have not dipped below 600 since December 28, when 491 patients were receiving treatment in Ontario.
Ontario lifts mask mandates in most public spaces including schools, retail settings
TORONTO — Face masks will no longer be required in schools, retail settings and most other indoor public spaces in Ontario beginning today.
The change comes a few weeks after the province lifted proof-of-vaccination rules and capacity limits.
Select settings such as public transit, health-care facilities, long-term care homes and congregate care settings will keep mask mandates until the end of April, when the province plans to put an end to all remaining public health rules.

It explained that respect for its listeners was the company’s top priority, and the “arrogant and contemptuous attitude of the musicians towards Russian listeners” left it no choice but to terminate its contract with the artists.
