Beware the Ides of February

If you’re not making an extra effort to find some well reasoned thinking about the developing crisis in Ukraine, I’m not sure what to do for you. Well, perhaps I can point you in a direction to some of the better thinking on the issue I’ve found out there.

One of the best this week comes from Rob Lee over at FPRI.

He sets the table for you right off the bat in the first paragraph;

How ambitious are Russia’s foreign policy objectives, and how much force does Moscow believe it must employ to achieve them? Moscow has submitted various ultimatums, but the most critical and pressing issue is that the Kremlin now regards Ukraine as a permanently hostile country continuing to increase its defense capabilities. Russian hopes for improved relations with President Volodymyr Zelensky were dashed in 2021, and Moscow is now focused on reducing the long-term security risk posed by Ukraine, including halting its expanding defense cooperation with NATO. However, this is one of the most unrealistic and difficult demands for NATO to satisfy, particularly because Ukraine is developing long-range missiles domestically. This diplomatic impasse suggests a significant risk of a Russian military escalation in Ukraine with few obvious offramps.

A cold war with China and its authoritarian allies is inevitable

It’s become a boring habit of Chinese supreme leader Xi Jinping and his senior officials to ridicule any effort by the world’s democracies to uphold some modicum of “rules-based” international decorum as evidence of a zero-sum “Cold War” mentality. It’s a propaganda tool that has proved somewhat useful in the work of infantilizing the western “discourse” around China, which is why Beijing employs it so frequently.

Why Palestinian Leaders Ignore Arab Atrocities

Palestinian leaders never miss an opportunity to condemn Israel and accuse it of committing “crimes” against the Palestinians. This is in the context of the ongoing virulent Palestinian campaign of incitement against Israel.

The Palestinian leaders, however, remain oblivious to the suffering of their people in some Arab countries, especially Syria, where more than 4,100 Palestinians have been killed during the fighting between the Syrian army and the opposition or died as a result of torture, starvation and medical negligence over the past decade. These leaders are also most likely afraid that their Arab brothers would punish them if they speak out against the atrocities committed against Palestinians in the Arab countries.

Canada’s cyberspy agency warns of Russian cyberattacks on critical infrastructure

Canada’s cyberspy agency is warning of Moscow-backed cyberattacks on Canadian critical infrastructure as Western countries prepare economic sanctions in the growing expectation that Russia will invade Ukraine.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security joined its counterparts in the United States and United Kingdom on Thursday in urging Canadian companies, such as electrical utilities and energy firms, to watch out for cyberattacks from Russia.

I bet the Russians will be pissed to find the ChiComs got there first.

Afghanistan tops roster of global Christian persecutors after Taliban takeover, crackdown

Afghanistan is the world’s most dangerous place for Christians, displacing North Korea for the first time in 20 years in a Christian advocacy group’s annual report.

Open Doors released its 2022 World Watch List on Wednesday, identifying 50 countries where as many as 100 million Christians face danger because of their faith. Nigeria and India are among the top 10 nations on the list, and China is ranked 17.

Woman sentenced to death in Pakistan over ‘blasphemous’ WhatsApp activity

… According to the charge sheet, Ateeq, 26, met her accuser, a fellow Pakistani, online in 2019 through a mobile gaming app and the pair began corresponding over WhatsApp.

He accused her of sending blasphemous caricatures of holy prophets, making remarks about “holy personages” on WhatsApp and using her Facebook account to transmit blasphemous material to other accounts. In doing so, she “deliberately and intentionally defiles sacred righteous personalities and insulted the religious beliefs of Muslims”, according to the charge sheet.

Ukraine President Zelensky hits back at Biden comments

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has hit back at comments made by his US counterpart Joe Biden about a “minor incursion” by Russia into his country.

Mr Biden had suggested that a “minor” attack might bring a weaker response from the US and its allies.

But Mr Zelensky tweeted: “There are no minor incursions. Just as there are no minor casualties and little grief from the loss of loved ones.”

Russia has some 100,000 troops near the border but denies planning an invasion.

To Avoid More Attacks Like at Texas Synagogue, Biden Administration Must Know, Name Our Enemies – Starting with CAIR

It’s not just Siddiqui who spews antisemitic bile, but the leadership of the Council on American-Islamic Relations also actively trade in Jew-hatred.

The FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team and local Texas police officers deserve enormous gratitude for securing the safe release of four people taken hostage during a Jewish religious service at a Dallas-area synagogue.

But while we should praise these heroic actions, we should not overlook the politically-motivated claimed ignorance by senior FBI and Biden administration officials regarding the motive for this terrorist attack. This was a wake-up call for this administration to recognize, name, and prioritize America’s real enemies or similar attacks will follow.

President Joe Biden was widely criticized online on Wednesday following his about two-hour press conference, the first press conference that he’s given in months, over his responses to a variety of questions.

Biden suggested during the press conference that a “minor incursion” by Russia into Ukraine might not elicit the same response from the U.S. as a full-scale invasion.

When asked about his struggles in office and whether he overpromised on the campaign trail, Biden responded, “I didn’t over-promise, but I have probably outperformed what anyone thought would happen.”

Beijing Warns of ‘Punishment’ If Foreign Athletes Protest at Olympics

An official with China’s Olympics organizing committee has cautioned foreign athletes against speaking out during next month’s Winter Olympics, warning that any behavior that violates Chinese regulations could potentially get them ejected from the Games.

“Any expression that is in line with the Olympic spirit I’m sure will be protected, and anything and any behavior or speeches that is against the Olympic spirit, especially against Chinese laws and regulations, are also subject to certain punishment,” said Yang Shu, deputy director-general of Beijing 2022’s international relations department.

Unlikely Most ‘Havana Syndrome’ Cases Caused by Foreign Power, C.I.A. Says

WASHINGTON — The C.I.A. has found that most cases of the mysterious ailments known as Havana syndrome are unlikely to have been caused by Russia or another foreign adversary, agency officials said, a conclusion that angered victims.

A majority of the 1,000 cases reported to the government can be explained by environmental causes, undiagnosed medical conditions or stress, rather than a sustained global campaign by a foreign power, C.I.A. officials said, describing the interim findings of a comprehensive study.
