Heavy police presence in Sydney for New Year’s celebrations after Bondi attack

Thousands of heavily armed police officers are patrolling the streets of Sydney as people mark the new year – a rare and stark sight in Australia, following the Bondi Beach mass shooting.

Some officers were authorised to carry high-grade weapons as part of heightened security measures. The attack on 14 December targeted Australia’s Jewish community and killed 15 people at a Hanukkah festival.

New South Wales (NSW) Police said more than 2,500 officers would be on duty across the city.

‘Canada may get a call’: Expert says Gaza peace plan hinges on international force

As international attention turns to the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire, a Middle East security expert says the deal faces political and security obstacles – with Hamas’ refusal to disarm emerging as the main issue.

Speaking ahead of the planned meeting between Trump and Netanyahu, Thomas Warwick, a senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative told CTV’s News Channel on Monday the talks are likely to narrow, but will not resolve major differences.

Netanyahu is expected to press Washington for broader freedom of action on several fronts including support against Iran’s rebuilding missile program, Hezbollah’s presence in Lebanon and Gaza itself, Warwick said.

Motorbike collection worth $40m seized from Olympian turned ‘drug kingpin’

Mexican police have seized a $40m (£30m) motorcycle collection believed to be owned by the former Olympian and alleged drug kingpin Ryan James Wedding.

Wedding, a snowboarder who represented his native Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics, is responsible for trafficking 60,000 kg of cocaine every year, according to the FBI.

The US department of justice has described the 44-year-old as the “largest distributor of cocaine in Canada” and on a par with the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar.
