China mines social media sites including Twitter and Facebook to equip its military and government agencies with data on Western targets

China is mining social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, to harvest data on Western targets for its military, police and government agencies.

The government is purchasing newer and more sophisticated data surveillance systems to collect information on foreign entities, according to the Washington Post which reviewed bidding documents and contracts for over 300 Chinese government projects dating back to early 2020.

The documents revealed the purchase of a $320,000 Chinese state media software that mines social media to create a database of foreign journalists and academics.

In the footsteps of the women who escaped a Nazi death march

Gwen Strauss was enjoying a leisurely lunch with her 83-year-old great-aunt, Hélène Podliasky.

Hélène was French and Gwen, an American author, lives in France.

It was 2002 and the conversation turned to Hélène’s past. Gwen knew her great-aunt had worked in the Resistance in France during World War Two, but didn’t know anything about that time in her life.

Hélène told the story of how she was captured by the Gestapo, tortured and deported to Germany to a concentration camp. As the allies drew near, the camp was evacuated and she was forced to walk for miles on a Nazi death march.

“Then I escaped with a group of women,” she said briefly.

The escalating international war against Israel

At the U.N. General Assembly last month, a large majority of member nations voted to lavishly fund a permanent inquisition against the Jewish state. The member states funded the operation of an “ongoing independent, international commission of inquiry” against Israel.

The commission, run by outspoken haters of Israel with long records of demonizing it and its people, was formed by the U.N. Human Rights Council in a special session in May. Its purpose is to deny and reject Israel’s right to exist, its right to self-defense, its right to enforce its laws and its citizens’ rights to their properties and to their very lives.

White flag: EU to declare natural gas, nuclear power “green”

It’s no secret that most of Europe (and much of the world, really) has been struggling to meet the ambitious “green energy” goals that were demanded during the climate summit last year. Analysts in the energy industry had attempted to warn them that a full conversion to wind and solar, involving the total abandonment of fossil fuels, wouldn’t be able to produce enough energy to keep the grid at full power in the specified time frame. Those predictions proved true when Germany was forced to restart some of its coal-fired plants last April after the lights started going out at night.

Ford cabinet to discuss new public health restrictions in Ontario as COVID-19 cases spike: sources

 

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is meeting with his cabinet on Sunday to discuss additional public health restrictions, CBC News has learned.

Two sources, who spoke with CBC News on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media, said the cabinet meeting is being held Sunday afternoon.

Ontario reintroduced capacity limits at restaurants, bars and retailers on Dec. 19, in an effort to slow the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

China unveils plan to ‘take over’ Latin America

Chinese Communist Party officials have unveiled an “action plan for cooperation” with Latin American countries that amounts to a “comprehensive” plan to cultivate influence and threaten American interests, following a new ministerial with the nearest neighbors of the United States.

“The Chinese don’t say, ‘We want to take over Latin America,’ but they clearly set out a multidimensional engagement strategy, which, if successful, would significantly expand their leverage and produce enormous intelligence concerns for the United States,” U.S. Army War College research professor Evan Ellis, a former member of the State Department policy planning staff, told the Washington Examiner.
