Ontario’s new pandemic strategy risks ‘out of control’ transmission, epidemiologists warn

Two Ontario epidemiologists are warning that recent changes to the province’s COVID-19 pandemic strategy risk uncontrolled transmission of the virus, while at the same time, limiting the ability to measure its spread.

Raywat Deonandan, epidemiologist and associate professor at the University of Ottawa, and Colin Furness, infection control epidemiologist and associate professor at the University of Toronto, both say they aren’t convinced the province’s new approach will be able to protect Ontarians and the broader health system from the impact of a surge of the highly-infectious Omicron variant.

“There seems to be an acceptance that transmission will be out of control the next few weeks and maybe there is a silent hope that unrestrained transmission might result in sufficient immunity in the population without much cost,” said Deonandan.

Why is it that the CDC website that lists 146 million people having already had COVID-19 in the USA has not been updated since October 2, 2021? A quick, back of the napkin calculation projects at least another 20-30 million have had COVID since then. Bringing the number of people who have had COVID to around 170 million. Well over half the people in the USA.

Well, good on ya, Canada. It seems the motto ‘come and take it’ isn’t unique to just Americans. Our neighbors to the north have a new gun law. It’s something that anti-gun liberals want here nationwide. All Canadians that owned firearms that have been included in the nation’s latest ban on so-called assault weapons must turn them over to authorities. The only problem is that they’re not doing it.

Almost a year ago, Canadians tuned in to watch one of the scariest reality TV shows ever produced: early 21st century American politics. On Jan. 6, thousands of radicalized, ill-informed Americans stormed the Capitol building to disrupt the certification of the results of the presidential election. Later in the year, our own federal election campaign was marred by conspiracy theorists hurling insults and stones at our Prime Minister. While the scale of these protests was much smaller than those in Washington, their angry tone was enough to deflate our sense of moral superiority. Were the events in the United States simply a preview of our own political future?

TikTok ‘transgender man’ with no ‘top’ surgery lets it all hang out

Up until now, the matter of transgender surgery, and whether someone who identifies as transgender has had it, was “a private matter.”

That’s mainly the result of the controversy over men entering and ogling women in women’s restrooms, as well as the issue of jail rapes in women’s prisons, brought on by unreconstructed males impersonating females and then acting as criminals with their still male members. No polite person is ever supposed to know or ask.

But now we have something else: a TikTok lib who insists on letting it all hang out.

Two weeks later SenseTime moved its IPO to Hong Kong; it rose 44% in the first two days of trading. China has a trade surplus, $3.2 trillion in reserves, and a 40% savings rate. It is an exporter, not an importer of capital. American capital markets are a convenience, not a necessity for Chinese companies.

No crowds attended the cortege for Assunta Maresca, better known as Pupetta Maresca, who died at home this week in Castellammare di Stabia aged 86. Maresca, a convicted murderer and mafia boss also known as Lady Camorra, had been the centre of such frenzied media attention in her life that Naples authorities declared she would not have a public send-off.

“We are seeing on social media a glorification of this woman who is a symbol of the Camorra in our neighbourhood,” Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a regional councillor for the Europa Verde party, said in a letter to the Naples police. “The mythologising of bosses is to be avoided at all costs.”

How Covid killed grown-up movies at the theater

Audiences may never leave their couches again — unless it’s for Spider-Man 7

The box office news from earlier this December was mixed. The stupendous success of the latest Spider-Man sequel, No Way Home, indicated that fears of the Omicron variant have not deterred audiences from coming out in the millions: it grossed $260 million at the US box office and $600 million globally.

But it also trampled other less franchise-friendly films. Guillermo del Toro’s new picture Nightmare Alley debuted to a dismal $3 million, and Steven Spielberg’s version of West Side Story will be one of the director’s greatest flops, having grossed a mere $18 million in the US so far. The chances of either film — expensively mounted period pieces from A-list directors — recouping their production budgets at the theater, let alone their advertising costs, is zero.
