International students and offshore banking flagged in Canadian real estate money laundering

Money Laundering

In August 2012, a 19-year-old student from Guangdong arrived from the Dominican Republic to Montreal with $23,800 in euros and U.S. dollars stuffed into his backpack. Four months later, Zhang Guanqun purchased an 8,500-square-foot mansion in Coquitlam, B.C., for $2.1 million.

It was only one of Zhang’s many multimillion-dollar transactions while attending Coquitlam College. From about 2012 to 2015, Zhang would funnel at least $33.75 million in electronic funds and cash through Canadian and Hong Kong bank accounts.

Harry Rakowski: Canada can weather the rest of the pandemic without more harsh restrictions. Here’s how

While the coronavirus situation in Canada is stable, the fourth wave of COVID-19 is surging in many parts of Europe. In recent days, Norway, Finland, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia have all reported their highest daily infection rates since the start of the pandemic. Bulgaria and the German state of Bavaria are facing a severe shortage of intensive care beds. Cases in England are finally coming down, but remain disturbingly high compared to other European countries. What lessons can we learn to avoid more restrictions in the future?

Canada’s mask guidance has changed. Here’s why you might need an upgrade

Now that the cold weather has hit and people are moving inside, many doctors and scientists are urging Canadians not only to resist getting complacent about wearing masks to protect against COVID-19 — but also to take a closer look at whether that cloth mask is keeping you and others as safe as possible.

“In general, while non-medical masks can help prevent the spread of COVID-19, medical masks and respirators provide better protection,” the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said on its COVID-19 mask information webpage, which was updated on Nov. 12.

As supply chain woes continue, Biden plans vaccine mandate for non-resident truck drivers entering the US — still no such requirement for illegal aliens

The United States is continuing to experience a supply chain problem. We are seeing shipyards backlogged with shipping containers waiting for truck drivers. The situation has resulted in empty shelves in a lot of stores.

So … what is President Joe Biden doing to help ensure the U.S. is able to get goods shipped more easily?

Does forcing non-resident truckers crossing the U.S.-Canadian border to show proof of vaccination count? Most observers would say no.

How the BBC is crushing the climate debate

BBC News carried two articles last week denigrating and demonising the critics of climate-change alarmism.

The first was by Marianna Spring, the BBC’s ‘specialist disinformation reporter’. She asserted that criticism of environmentalism was being fuelled by right-wing conspiracy theorists who had switched ‘from Covid denial to climate denial’. And the second came from reporters Rachel Schraer and Kayleen Devlin, who are both part of the BBC’s ‘Reality Check’ team of fact-checkers. They claimed to have exposed ‘the truth behind the new climate-change denial’. Both articles are travesties of journalism.
