Imagine a world where overturning Citizens United could be done with a simple act of Congress. According to polls, 88% of Americans hailing from both sides of the aisle would back a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision. But why does it take a constitutional amendment? Because the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that political donations constitute free speech, and because corporations have a constitutionally protected right to free speech, including unlimited donations. Since changing the U.S. Constitution is exceedingly difficult, this is not likely. But what if Congress could simply override the Supreme Court and say that there are limits to such forms of free speech. Canada has such a mechanism in its constitution, and it is starting to raise serious ethical concerns.

Hungary bans ‘promotion’ of homosexuality and transgenderism to under-18s amid protests
A law prohibiting the sharing of content portraying homosexuality and transgenderism to those under the age of 18 has been passed by Hungary’s National Assembly.
The vote passed on Tuesday by a vote of 157-1.
The law was included in a larger bill cracking down on pedophilia by creating a register of child sex offenders, implementing stricter punishments for child pornography, and barring pedophile offenders from jobs where they would encounter children. It also singled out the promotion of LGBT affairs in schools.
Queen’s U staff, associates accused of falsely claiming Indigenous identity
Queen’s University has become embroiled in an increasingly public dispute over whether some of its faculty and other associates are falsely holding themselves out to be Indigenous, thereby harming the cause of First Nations people.
An anonymous report into the identity claims posted on social media earlier this month takes specific aim at six academics and others associated with the school it says are not genuinely Indigenous.
“Our findings confirm that Queen’s University is currently overrun with white Canadians making false claims to Indigenous — especially Algonquin — identity,” the report states. “We are confident that our thorough research has focused on six of the most prominent and harmful cases, most of whom play inordinate roles as ‘Indigenous’ gatekeepers on campus.”

Alberta referendum on equalization puts federal leaders in difficult position
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative leader Erin O’Toole are refusing to be drawn on Alberta’s upcoming referendum on equalization, making it unclear if anyone will be listening when Albertans speak this fall.
For Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, the referendum is a way of highlighting the unfairness of equalization, but for federal leaders it poses a major political headache about how to respond to the vote.
I think the Republic of Ottawa should secede.
