China’s emerging digital currency could enhance the yuan’s importance in the international financial system at the expense of the U.S. dollar and extend the Chinese surveillance state into wallets around the world.

A combination of visibility of currency users and technical control is a monetary dream for Chinese communist officials, who have staked their regime on their ability to monitor and curtail private activity within China. The digital yuan’s acceptance beyond mainland China could give the regime a significant geo-economic tool, one that bypasses the network of banks and financial institutions that are subject to U.S. laws and binds client states more directly to Beijing.

Canada’s muddled pandemic communications

One of the biggest challenges Canada has faced throughout this pandemic is that so many leaders and so many voices are involved in the official response. Politicians give regular press conferences. Public health officials do the same. Advisory committees of independent experts speak up and challenge not only governments, but other experts. Researchers, clinicians and journalists all have something to say. Our fuzzy federalism makes this that much harder, as it multiplies voices and points of authority. In order to get through this third wave, and stave off a potential fourth wave in the fall, this needs to change.

It’s the story that reaches to the top of the Prime Minister’s Office, that has caused damage to the Liberal government’s feminist brand, led to calls for the defence minister to resign and for the prime minister to fire his chief of staff.

At the heart of it is this question: What happened with an allegation against ex-chief of the defence staff Gen. Jonathan Vance in 2018?

Or as some critics would say: Why did nothing happen with an allegation against Canada’s former top soldier, who remained in the position for almost another three years, and is now under military police investigation? And where was the follow up?

Comedian Sarah Silverman advocated for biological males who identify as female to be allowed to participate in girls’ and women’s sports.

The comedian also called California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce Jenner, a “t***” for acknowledging biological differences and advocating the separation of sports by biology instead of gender identity. Silverman even suggested Jenner, who is transgender, is transphobic.

Alleged Isis recruiter Mohamed Zuhbi arrested on return to Australia

A 30-year-old Sydney man who is alleged to be an Islamic State recruiter has been arrested and charged with terrorism offences upon his return to Australia.

Mohamed Zuhbi arrived in Melbourne on a flight from Turkey about 4pm on Saturday and was taken into custody by counterterrorism authorities at the airport.

Zuhbi travelled from Sydney to Turkey in 2013 and then allegedly on to Syria, where he allegedly helped foreign fighters travel to the area to support Isis.

… It astonished Redfeather that on a reservation where new development is tightly controlled by tribal bureaucracy, a large-scale farming operation was going up across the street without her even hearing about it. The Navajo Nation was also struggling with a severe coronavirus outbreak, one of the worst in the country, and movement on and off the reservation was supposed to be tightly controlled.

She decided to record what was going on on her phone.

“They’re like, ‘What are you doing here?'” she recalls. “These are non-Natives. So of course, I fired back saying, ‘What are you doing here? You guys aren’t allowed here.'”
