Marine Le Pen proposes hijab ban as French polls put her almost neck-and-neck with Emmanuel Macron

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen today proposed a ban on Muslim headscarves in all public places, seeking to build on a record recent poll putting her almost neck-and-neck with President Emmanuel Macron.

The hijab policy, which would be contested in court and would almost certainly be ruled unconstitutional, saw the 53-year-old return to a familiar campaign theme 15 months from the country’s 2022 presidential election.

‘I consider that the headscarf is an Islamist item of clothing,’ Le Pen told reporters at a press conference where she proposed a new law to ban ‘Islamist ideologies’ which she called ‘totalitarian and murderous.’

The ongoing insurrection against MAGA America

When Uncle Sam threatens some blighted and benighted region of the world – ostensibly on behalf of the American People and for their own good – our representatives call it peace through strength.

It is then that ordinary Americans are encouraged to pipe up in praise of the State’s invariably Orwellian peace-through-strength strategies.

But what about peace through strength on our front porches, while being menaced by lowbrow looters and assorted louts? For that you can be incarcerated in the land where the criminal roams free.

Howard Levitt: This might not be the end of Julie Payette’s sorry saga — we can expect lawsuits from employees

Howard Levitt: This might not be the end of Julie Payette’s sorry saga — we can expect lawsuits from employees

Julie Payette is unemployable.

The former governor-general’s resignation this week was prompted, of course, by a scathing review of the work environment she presided over at Rideau Hall, which was characterized by dozens of people as hostile and toxic. The government released some of the findings of the independent review on Wednesday.

Of course the employees would sue the government and tax payers would end up footing the bill all round.

Not The Bee: Black Lives Matter movement nominated for Nobel peace prize

The Black Lives Matter movement has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel peace prize for the way its call for systemic change has spread around the world.

In his nomination papers, the Norwegian MP Petter Eide said the movement had forced countries outside the US to grapple with racism within their own societies.

“I find that one of the key challenges we have seen in America, but also in Europe and Asia, is the kind of increasing conflict based on inequality,” Eide said. “Black Lives Matter has become a very important worldwide movement to fight racial injustice.

Matt Taibbi: Biden inauguration coverage shows why so many distrust the mainstream media

A day after U.S. President Joe Biden’s inauguration, the headline in Axios read: Trust In Media Hits A New Low.” Felix Salmon wrote that, “For the first time ever, fewer than half of all Americans have trust in traditional media.” The Edelman survey showed overall faith in the press dropping to 46 per cent.

The traditional explanation for this phenomenon is that Republicans hate the press a lot, but Democrats just a little. The Axios story bore this out somewhat, as only 18 per cent of Republicans reported trusting media, versus 57 per cent of Democrats.

The GameStop Boom

The GameStop Boom

Who’s behind the game retailer’s wild ride—and why you probably don’t need to worry

What a difference a year makes. Last year, hedge-funders were throwing up their hands and complaining about how much harder it was to make money. Algorithms moved so fast and bought so much stock that individual active traders, even if they had lots of capital, couldn’t move markets like they used to. But who could have foreseen a pandemic that would put people in front of their computers for hours at a time, with no sports to bet on and an axe to grind against Wall Street?

New York Scrambles To Deflect Blame On Nursing Home Deaths Undercount

New York Scrambles To Deflect Blame On Nursing Home Deaths Undercount

“…Now we know how the damage control plan is going to roll out. Rather than addressing the matter personally, Cuomo sent out state Health Commissioner, Howard Zucker to do the dirty work. Zucker has found the talking point they’re going to stick with, and it’s painfully obvious that they haven’t come up with much of a cover story. They’re claiming that there was no undercount and everyone is just arguing about semantics.”

N.Y. Severely Undercounted Virus Deaths in Nursing Homes, Report Says

The state attorney general, Letitia James, said it’s likely that the Cuomo administration failed to report thousands of Covid-19 deaths of nursing home residents.

US wants custody of terrorist convicted of killing journalist Daniel Pearl

The feds want to take custody of the Pakistani man suspected of beheading journalist Daniel Pearl after he was ordered released from prison by his country’s high court, US Acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson said this week.

Ahmad Omar Saeed Sheikh, who was convicted of beheading Pearl in 2002, has long been indicted for the slaying in the US — and letting him escape justice would be an “affront” to Pearl’s family, Wilkinson said.

Michigan approves Great Lakes oil pipeline tunnel permits

TRAVERSE CITY, MICH. — Michigan’s environmental agency said Friday it has approved construction of an underground tunnel to house a replacement for a controversial oil pipeline in a channel linking two of the Great Lakes.

The decision, a victory for Enbridge Inc., comes as the Canadian company resists Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s demand to shut down its 68-year-old line in the Straits of Mackinac.

Enbridge disputes her claim — echoed by environmentalists and native tribes — that the pipeline segment crossing the 4-mile-wide waterway is unsafe. But Enbridge had earlier sought to ease public concern by striking a deal with Whitmer’s predecessor, Republican Rick Snyder, in 2018 to run a new pipe through a tunnel to be drilled beneath the straits connecting Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.

A little good news for a change.
