Ontario reports 1,677 new Covid cases

Ontario reported 1,677 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday along with 16 new deaths, as the province’s total confirmed death toll since the pandemic began approached 4,000.

“Locally, there are 456 new cases in Toronto, 356 in Peel and 143 in York Region,” Health Minister Christine Elliott wrote on Twitter.

Coronavirus: Germany to go into lockdown over Christmas

Germany is to go into a hard lockdown over the Christmas period as the number of deaths and infections from the coronavirus reaches record levels.

Non-essential shops will close across the country from Wednesday, as will schools, with children to be cared for at home wherever possible.

Chancellor Angela Merkel blamed Christmas shopping for a “considerable” rise in social contacts.

The latest figures showed 20,200 more infections and a further 321 deaths.

“What’s amazing about this database is not just that it exposes people who are members of the communist party, and who are now living and working all over the world, from Australia to the US to the UK,” Ms Markson said.

Proline Advantage Inc.’s tender submission was one of more than 26,000 received by the government through its BuyandSell.gc.ca portal after it put out a call to suppliers last March for help procuring PPE.

An opinion writer’s suggestion that the next US First Lady Jill Biden should stop referring to herself as “Dr” has sparked an angry reaction online.

Joseph Epstein called Biden “kiddo” and compared her doctorate in education to honorary degrees given to celebrities.

“‘Dr Jill Biden’ sounds and feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic,” he wrote in the Wall Street Journal.

But social media users argued that the article reflected sexist attitudes faced by many women in academia.

Biden, who uses her academic title on her Twitter profile, received her doctorate in 2007 from the University of Delaware, focusing on student retention in community colleges in her dissertation.

North Korea accused of using COVID-19 to crack down on human rights

North Korea is using the coronavirus pandemic to crack down even more on its people, seven members of the United Nations Security Council said.

Germany, Britain, France, Belgium, Estonia, the United States and the Dominican Republic made the accusation Friday during a private, virtual meeting, Reuters reported.

“The DPRK’s human rights violations pose an imminent threat to international peace and security. The DPRK government diverts resources away from its people to its illicit ballistic missile and nuclear programs,” the seven countries said in a statement.

Ryan suggested that someone must have had a nefarious reason to leak a recording of Biden’s teleconference earlier this week with civil rights leaders, in which he complained that the “defund the police” movement had hurt Democrats with voters and warned that he wouldn’t use executive orders to enact a slew of progressive policies.
