Coast guard patrol ships to be pulled from service ‘sooner than expected,’ amid pressures from new security mandate

OTTAWA — A long-troubled fleet of coast guard patrol ships that the Canadian government paid hundreds of millions to build will be pulled from service “sooner than expected,” an internal document shows.

It comes as the civilian agency braces for more demands under its new surveillance mandate from Prime Minister Mark Carney, who announced back in June that it would be folded into the National Defence Department.

Get In, Losers. We’re About to Blow Up a Lot More Narcos.

First up, I want to be clear that I don’t think any of you are losers. My headline comes from a movie quote, and the losers in this situation are the Democrat senators — minus John Fetterman and plus Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul — who vote against this stuff, as well as the governments in other parts of the world that want to tell us how to do our business, but more on that in a minute.

Canadian Travel to the U.S. Declines for 10th Straight Month

Canadians are keeping up their efforts to boycott travel to the United States, with air travel from the country dropping last month by nearly 24 percent, and car travel by more than 30 percent compared with the same time last year, according to data released Wednesday by Canada’s statistics office.

The decline, which has lasted 10 consecutive months, is part of a broader shift in Canadians’ attitudes toward the United States, amid tensions over President Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods and the rhetoric that many Canadians feel is condescending.

Palestinians living in Gaza lose lawsuits that would force Canada to process crisis travel visas

Palestinians in Gaza who applied to join relatives in Canada two years ago under Ottawa’s crisis immigration policy but haven’t received travel visas lost their lawsuits trying to force officials to act despite security problems in the war-torn region.

Four similar court actions asked the Federal Court to order officials with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to process their temporary resident visa applications.

Italy to investigate ‘sniper tourism’ during Bosnian War

More than three decades after the siege of Sarajevo, Italian prosecutors have launched an investigation into what may well be one of the darkest and least-known aspects of the Bosnian War, which ran from 1992 until 1995.

The investigation centers on so-called “hobby snipers” or “sniper tourists.” These were foreigners who allegedly paid to shoot at civilians in the city of Sarajevo, during what were called “Sarajevo safaris.” At the time, Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was besieged by Bosnian Serb forces.

More than 40% of Canadian births had foreign-born mothers in 2024: StatCan

New data from Statistics Canada is shedding light on the contribution of foreign-born mothers to annual Canadian births, which would have fallen significantly since 2010 without them, the agency says.

A new study released on Thursday found that in 2024, more than 40 per cent of babies were born to a mother who themselves was not born in Canada. That’s compared to just 22.5 per cent in 1997, according to StatCan.

The study also found that in 2024, 57 per cent of new mothers over the age of 40 were foreign born.

How the FBI’s massive search for the D.C. pipe bomber stalled

In the weeks after a mob attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, the FBI dedicated more than 50 agents to one task: Finding the person who had planted a pair of pipe bombs near the Capitol.

Again and again, agents thought they were closing in on the culprit.

Early on, they questioned a Capitol Hill-area gym employee who had purchased the same Nike shoes as a person captured in grainy security camera footage crisscrossing the area the night before the riot. Then they suspected a man who had been spotted snapping photos of locations outside the Republican and Democratic Party headquarters before the bombs were placed there. Later, agents found an actual bombmaker — he just turned out to be the wrong one.

Daughter of Barry and Honey Sherman speaks on their deaths ahead of 8th anniversary

Eight years after Barry and Honey Sherman were murdered, their daughter Alex Krawczyk is still holding out hope that justice will be served.

The Shermans were found dead from strangulation in the basement pool area of their home on Old Colony Road in Toronto’s North York neighbourhood on Dec. 15, 2017, and the case has remained unsolved.

“I’m encouraged, to a small degree, that the case is still active, that [the police] haven’t since said. ‘we can’t solve this,’” Krawczyk told CBC Radio’s Metro Morning earlier this week.

Members of MS-13, now a Foreign Terrorist Org, prosecuted for brutal murders, fentanyl trafficking

Federal, state and local law enforcement officers continue to target Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) U.S.-Salvadoran transnational gang members nationwide.

MS-13 was designated as a foreign terrorist organization earlier this year. The gang originated in Los Angeles in the 1980s to protect Salvadoran illegal foreign nationals but later expanded its criminal enterprise. Its members engage in “campaigns of violence and terror in the United States and internationally” and present “an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States,” President Donald Trump said in a June MS-13 FTO order.

Sara Sharif murder: hijab not questioned over fears of causing offence

Sara Sharif was murdered by her father and stepmother after a professional may have “feared causing offence” and failed to question why she was wearing a hijab that hid her injuries, a damning review has found.

The report, commissioned by the Surrey Safeguarding Children Partnership, found that “race was a bar to reporting possible child abuse” and “professionals never explored how [her Pakistani heritage] impacted on Sara”.
