Canada pushes to join Eurovision: ‘This is about protecting our identity’

The prestige of Eurovision – I don’t want anything to do with this identity

When Canada released its federal budget this month, much of it was standard fare, from the plans to downsize the public service to the boost in defence spending.

But one line tucked in the nearly 500-page document has captured imaginations on both sides of the Atlantic: a mention that the government is working with Canada’s national broadcaster to explore participation in the Eurovision song contest.

When asked about the line, the country’s finance minister, François-Philippe Champagne, said the proposal to join the glitzy TV extravaganza had come from “the people who participate”.

Germany agrees new military service plan to boost troop numbers

Germany’s coalition government has agreed a new military service plan to boost troop numbers following months of wrangling between political forces.

Klinger Self Pre-screen

The new military service plan will mandate all 18-year-old men to fill out a questionnaire on their suitability to serve and, from 2027, to undergo medical screening.

The decision comes as Berlin aims to create Europe’s strongest conventional army.

The boss of Germany’s biggest defence firm, Rheinmetall, has told the BBC he believes that target could be met in five years.

Indian man won’t get $15K back for ‘illegal contract’ with Alberta immigration fixer

An Indian man who paid a fixer $15,000 in a failed attempt to extend his work permit in Canada entered into an “illegal contract” and is not entitled to get his money back, according to a recent decision from Alberta’s Court of Justice.

Ritik Sibbal sued Rajiv Chourhary Nathyal because the letter of endorsement from the City of Grande Prairie that Nathyal had agreed to help him obtain never materialized.

Black monks and villagers feature in title showing Scotland’s history as multicultural

Children’s book portrays Picts as black

The Picts have been depicted as black in a new book intended to show that Scotland has always been “multicultural and diverse”.

An illustrated book has been created to make the history of the Picts, who flourished from around 300 AD to 900 AD, more accessible to young people.

Illustrations in the volume depict the early inhabitants of north-east Scotland as multiracial, with black monks, bishops, religious healers and ordinary villagers.

Whoever engages in such antics should be horse whipped.

Michael Taube: No, Pierre Poilievre’s leadership isn’t in trouble

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has had a difficult couple weeks. His only Nova Scotia-based MP, Chris d’Entremont, crossed the floor to the Liberals on Nov. 4. Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux then announced on Nov. 6 that he’ll be resigning his seat next spring.

Both decisions were obviously unfortunate. No political leader would ever willingly want to go through these types of political headaches. This was especially true when last week’s focus should have been squarely on a federal Liberal budget touting a much-higher-than-expected deficit of $78.3 billion.

Ten Per Cent of CSIS Terror Investigations Involve Teens, Canadian Spy Boss Warns

OTTAWA — In his first speech as Canada’s new intelligence chief, CSIS Director Dan Rogers said the agency observed “foreign interference activity of concern” during the 2025 federal election — though not at a level that altered Canada’s ability to hold a “free and fair” vote — warning that the country now faces escalating national-security threats shaped by violent extremism, criminal–state hybrid networks, and transnational repression from China, India, and Iran, which, in extreme cases, involves “threats to safety and life.”

Addressing espionage and attempts to recruit Canadians, the new CSIS director singled out China prominently.
