Trump envoy pushes Ukraine to hand over Donetsk to Russia

Donald Trump’s lead negotiator has been pushing Volodymyr Zelensky to hand over the entire Donetsk region to Russia in order to end the war in Ukraine, it has emerged.

Steve Witkoff, who has met with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, five times this year, told the Ukrainian delegation visiting the White House last Friday to surrender the territory its forces control.

It is one of the key demands made by Putin, who made clear in a phone call with Mr Trump last week that he still wants Ukraine to give up the stretch of land as a precondition for peace, The Washington Post reported.

LILLEY: Carney must fix Canada’s rep as an unreliable trade partner

As Mark Carney heads to Asia later this week he’ll be fighting a poor perception of Canada, that we’re an unreliable trading partner. It’s not the Americans saying this at the moment, though they would agree, it’s not the Brits who might nod their heads, and it’s not the European Union, which would also side with the sentiment.

Is Canada’s F-35 review irritating the United States? McGuinty suggests it’s a ‘misnomer’

Defence Minister David McGuinty says the question of irritants in Canada-U.S. defence talks is “maybe a bit of a misnomer” and the two countries are working together on shared initiatives like integrated air missile defence systems.

“We have an integrated defence system,” McGuinty said in an interview on Rosemary Barton Live airing Sunday morning. “We are active members of NORAD. It’s the only binational command in the world.”

McGuinty was asked by host Rosemary Barton about Canada’s ongoing review of its F-35 contract with U.S.-based Lockheed Martin — something the U.S. ambassador Pete Hoekstra has called an irritant — and whether it’s been raised by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

Artificial intelligence threatening to push young people out of entry-level jobs

OTTAWA — Throughout her university career, Jacqueline Silver assumed her computer science degree would guarantee her a job. Finding out she was wrong was a demoralizing experience.

Silver, who graduated recently from McGill University and now lives in Toronto, spent more than a year applying for hundreds of jobs before finally finding one in her field this month.

“I was really exhausted, and it was also just really discouraging,” said Silver, who noted that several of her classmates have also had trouble finding work.

Why can’t Birmingham protect Jews? Banning Israeli football fans smacks of appeasement

Birmingham England

On October 7, two years ago, Emily Damari was kidnapped by Hamas. She lost two of her fingers when they shot her in the leg and the hand, and was kept in the dark until January this year. Not so proud to be American — ‘fed up’ expats renounce citizenship

Each year, 5,000 to 6,000 Americans renounce U.S. citizenship mostly for tax-related and logistical reasons but politics is now playing a more central role, lawyers say.

LONDON — On the morning after the U.S. election last November, an American living in London woke up, read that Donald Trump would be returning to the White House and sent an email to the U.S. Embassy. It said, in essence, I want a divorce.

A year later, the country of his birth is about to grant his request not to be an American any more.

The man, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he fears retribution by the Trump administration, is in the final phase of expatriation, the process of formally renouncing his U.S. citizenship.

The author wants you to believe more Americans are renouncing citizenship when in fact all that is happening is an uptick in those citing “politics” as the reason for their choice… lawyers say.

WHISSELL: No extremism in Canada’s military is left unchecked, right?

The problem with pretending violent extremism has just one ideological root.

As the Canadian military aims to overcome its recruitment crisis, past scandals, and rising extremism, ideological influence presents a significant threat to their efforts. If it remains unchecked, ideological influence can adversely affect the presence of extremism among ranks, as well as the ability to detect it.

Because of a stunning discovery by a Canadian journalist, discussed herein, I now believe the ability to detect and address extremism in Canada’s military is more limited than previously thought.

Let me explain why.

BBC’s message to working-class white youths: Keep your mouths shut

OH, the BBC. The front cover of Radio Times for the week beginning yesterday draws our attention to a season of FEMALE-LED shows. Of course it does. The viewing public wants nothing more than another tranche of hard-boiled, resourceful, compassionate girl-bosses leaving their male colleagues trailing helplessly in their wake. After all, who could possibly object to a female boss?

The Great Feminisation

Woke began the day, 20 years ago, when Larry Summers was forced out of Harvard for saying there are innate differences between men and women, argues Helen Andrews in Compact. His cancellation was feminine, because all cancellations are feminine – and the rise of wokery is synonymous with the Great Feminisation as women become majorities in Western workplaces. Here’s an excerpt.

In 2019, I read an article about Larry Summers and Harvard that changed the way I look at the world. The author, writing under the pseudonym “J. Stone”, argued that the day Larry Summers resigned as president of Harvard University marked a turning point in our culture. The entire ‘woke’ era could be extrapolated from that moment, from the details of how Summers was cancelled and, most of all, who did the cancelling: women.

Canadian snowbirds fingerprinted and photographed at U.S. border as part of new requirement

Several Canadian snowbirds reported they were fingerprinted and photographed at the U.S. border this month when registering for their winter stay, which U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) told CBC News is now standard procedure.

Jacquie and Steve Ree of Ladysmith, B.C., arrived at the Peace Arch Border Crossing between Surrey, B.C., and Blaine, Wash., on Oct. 9.

The snowbirds knew they’d have to comply with a new registration requirement for travellers staying in the United States longer than 29 days. So when a CBP officer said they could complete the process at the border, the couple agreed, unaware of what lay ahead.
