‘Look around, this city is in decline’: Why Toronto is failing

Toronto is a “world-class city,” says its mayor Olivia Chow. But for a growing number of its residents, the city is unrecognizable from decades ago, whether it’s the homelessness, open drug use, empty storefronts, or crumbling infrastructure.

Why these companies insist on a 72-hour work week

As the race to lead in artificial intelligence intensifies, Silicon Valley startups are promoting hardcore cultures like “996”

SAN FRANCISCO — Magnus Müller works around-the-clock, including Saturdays and Sundays. Sometimes that might mean starting at 7 a.m. until he goes to sleep at midnight or 1 a.m. The co-founder and CEO of the AI start-up Browser Use lives in a co-living space known as a “hacker house” with five others in the upscale Marina neighborhood of San Francisco. This living situation allows his team to convene around a whiteboard at 1 a.m. to work out new ideas for AI agents.

KLEIN: Indigenous spending tops $32 billion, accountability still lacking

We are living in an era of historic spending on Indigenous priorities. The 2024–25 federal budget devotes nearly $32 billion toward programs and services. That level of commitment demands more than applause — it demands evidence and accountability. The question is simple: where is all that money going, and is it truly reaching the people it is meant to help?

How China Took Over the World’s Rare-Earths Industry

When China tightened restrictions on rare-earth exports this month, stunning the White House, it was the latest reminder of Beijing’s control over an industry vital to the world economy.

Its dominance was decades in the making.

Since the 1990s, China has used aggressive tactics to build up and maintain its lock over rare-earth minerals, which are essential to making magnets needed for cars, wind turbines, jet fighters and other products.

DEI is ‘illiberal, anti-merit,’ says analyst as Poilievre pushes to end government DEI programs

Bringing an end to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives within Canada’s government, as proposed by Pierre Poilievre, would allow people to be chosen for roles based on merit and character, says the founder of a Canadian think tank.

“It goes to the basic question of what kind of society you want and what governments should be doing. Governments should not have bureaucracies whose job it is to discriminate based on skin colour, ethnicity, gender,” Mark Milke told National Post.

There is no suggestion that the officer complied with this request.

The sheer gall of Stellantis’ caving to Trump shows Canada’s industrial economy is on the line. Here’s how we fight back

As the saying goes, when someone tells you who they are, you should believe them. And where cars are concerned, Donald Trump has been telling us exactly who he is.

He warned in April, “We don’t really want Canada to make cars for us.” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently confirmed this goal, telling a Canadian audience “car assembly is going to be in America, and there is nothing Canada can do about it.”

Russia and left-wingers ‘trying to flood Europe with illegal migrants’

Russian spies and hard-left humanitarian groups are working with people smugglers to flood Europe with illegal migrants, a Bulgarian minister says.

Daniel Mitov, the interior minister, said his government had evidence that Russia’s foreign intelligence service had direct links with the criminal gangs facilitating illegal immigration into the European Union.

He said Russian spies were helping people smugglers find weaknesses in the EU’s external borders, including Bulgaria’s border with Turkey, and were telling migrants how to exploit EU and UK asylum systems and avoid removal.

This is very plausible and applies also to Canada and the USA except they have a Trump and we have co-conspirators and fellow travelers.

Disabled Canadians ‘Often’ Offered Euthanasia Unprompted, Advocate Tells MPs

Canadians with disabilities are being offered medical assistance in dying (MAID) when accessing health care for regular health concerns, a disabilities advocate told a parliamentary committee on Oct. 8.

“People with disabilities are now very much afraid in many circumstances to show up in the health care system with regular health concerns, because often MAID is suggested as a solution to what is considered to be intolerable suffering,” Krista Carr, CEO of Inclusion Canada, told the Parliamentary Finance Committee on Oct. 8.
